GRITtv: The F Word: Heat Rises in Dubai

New year, new symbol? The Burj Dubai fits. The 1 billion-pound building unveiled in downtown Dubai this week is the world’s new tallest tower. More than half a mile high, more than two Empire State buildings tall, the Dubai tower boasts 169 stories, the world's highest swimming pool, the world's highest place of worship, and the world's tallest mountain of denial. History repeats. Like its forebear, the Empire State building, the Dubai tower was built in a great global depression when cheap labor was plentiful, as were the dreams of the super rich. The engineering marvel was built by low paid, non union, immigrant workers, mostly Indians and Pakistanis, paid 5-20 dollar a day for dangerous work. (It's a state secret how many lost their lives in the process.) The tower features 144 apartments and a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer. In the super scraper, the super-affluent can live and vacation without leaving the building or the brand. Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed and his Chicago-based architects hail their building as a symbol of renaissance, the future, and all things great. There's just one glitch. That future involves melting the equivalent of 28 million pounds of ice a day for air conditioning, and they'll be consuming billions of gallons of desalinated water in a desert city-state that already has the world's highest per-capita carbon footprint. Tallest tower, biggest footprint. There's another remarkable thing about Burj Dubai. The climate actually changes as you ride up in the elevator. The temperature at the top can be as much as 10 degrees centrigrade cooler than at ground level. It's hotter at the bottom. Perhaps the best use of the Dubai Tower for the rest of us is a reminder. Look at Dubai's tower of denial and remember: It's hotter at the bottom but heat rises. Right? CORRECTION: In January 4th's program, I said that Dubai's tower cost one billion dollars. The closer-to-correct sum is $1.5 or a billion UK pounds. The tower is part o...
