Bolivia claims for the restoration of it’s Pacific coastline

One dream unites all Bolivians: to see the country’s border with the Pacific Ocean restored. The poorest South American country lost 400km of its coastline at the end of the 19th century after a war with Chile. Every March 23rd, the country commemorates its defeat and affirms its intention to return to the Pacific one day. Ever since Bolivia lost its coastline to Chile during the War of the Pacific 130 years ago, the Bolivian people have dreamed of getting it back. On the Day of the Sea, they come out in full force to show their desire to reclaim access to the Pacific. Evo Morales speech, “Bolivia was born with a Pacific coast. She lost it in an unjust war. Our government will work tirelessly to develop Bolivia's maritime interests and to gain sovereign access to the sea." A few weeks before, on the banks of Lake Titicaca, the president launched a new navy vessel 4000 meters above sea level, under the proud eyes of local residents. Resident of Guaqui, "Our dream for our children and grandchildren is to return to our ocean. It belongs to us. Guaqui, like the rest of Bolivia, wants it back." Even without a coastline, Bolivia has a navy. Its 6000 or so men spend their days patrolling the Amazon River, and the border with Peru where Lake Titicaca sits. Still, the Bolivian authorities insist that their military is capable of taking up maritime missions. Frigate Captain Luis Fernando Cortes Ovellano, Chief Commander of the 4th Naval District of Titicaca, "I've performed military exercises on the ocean three times. Thanks to similar experiences, our naval forces stand ready with the necessary skills to carry out missions at sea at any time." Although diplomatic relations between Bolivia and Chile ceased in 1978, today they are pursuing a dialogue. Bilateral talks are currently underway between the two nations, and for the first time the maritime question is on the agenda.
