In a world of too many graduates chasing too few jobs it’s up to careers advisors to offer students guidance and a helpful dose of reality. Fiona Sandford, Director of LSE Careers Service, "For many students it’s a complete change in the way you think. Because certainly students from prestigious universities have had employers queuing up to hire them and for this generation this is the first time they've seen any other form of behavior so suddenly the boot is on the other foot and students have to make a much bigger effort to find where the jobs are."

The pessimistic global outlook has seen Job vacancies in London’s financial heart fall drastically. This recruitment agency saw the number of new vacancies in December 2008 drop by two thirds from the same time the year before.

Students leaving university with business or economics degrees have cause for concern. The current economic crisis means that fewer places are available in their chosen fields. Students at one of London’s top universities for economics and finance. They were once in high demand from the city's banks and financial institutions. But the global financial slowdown means that the first step on the career ladder is becoming harder to reach. Rajan is about to finish his Economics degree but knows the odds of him finding his dream job are slim. Rajan Patel, LSE student of economics, "Many people would go from an economics degree thinking that this is the only thing that I want to do and not really spending any time exploring alternatives. This year people have found that this is just not a feasible option because there just aren't enough jobs in that sector any more to accommodate all the people that want to do it." Drane, along with the other women and children of her fiancé’s family, was deported to the south of the country. She spent 12 years working on building sites, carrying cement bags and even sharing dormitories with men. She also vowed never to marry again and to remain a virgin.
