Bubblegum Crisis, the classic animé cyberpunk video series from late '80s, has been remade as Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, while preserving many of the original’s appealing elements: an accomplished soundtrack (more techno and industrial influenced than the original's synth pop), a gritty urban landscape, dynamic fight scenes, and plots that feature intrigue and soap-opera dynamics equally. The key dynamic is the same as in the original. Genom is still a multinational conglomerate, both respected and feared; and the Knight Sabers are still vigilantes who battle rogue Boomers — Genom's cyborgs -- as they run amok in the streets of a Tokyo rebuilt after a devastating earthquake. There are quite a few other changes, though. Many Boomers are indistinguishable from humans, though they are regarded as second-class citizens at best. The Knight Sabers themselves operate in the shadows, their existence covered up by Genom and the media. Most important are the changes in the characters themselves. Although they bear the same names and roughly the same character traits, they are quite different from their original counterparts. This is especially true of the Knight Sabers. Sylia is no longer as cool-headed, and rarely engages in combat herself; Priss is even more aloof; Nene more of a fighter. Most striking is Linna: originally something of a cipher, she is Tokyo 2040's focal character. In fact, the series opens with her coming to Tokyo, where she searches for the Knight Sabers in order to join them in their crusade. Originally aired in Japan as a late-night TV series, Bubblegum Crisis' half-hour episodic format gives it a considerably different rhythm from its predecessor. However, its longer run (26 episodes, compared to the original's eight) also allows for characters and subplots to develop at a more leisurely pace. ~ Emru Townsend, All Movie Guide
