not for children... well actually... it IS for children... that's who i wrote it for... but it is VERY grim so view with caution :)i wrote this for a class, i don't preform it exactly how it is on the page but don't worry... either way is "correct" whatever you like better... it is a sestina (with the subtle changing of words aka "cheating")I think my lines are a bit long so you might not be able to see the line endings but the same 6 words (or slightly changed) words are used for the endings of each line of the poem (in a different order for each stanza)make sure to learn more about poetic forms from my wonderful teacher, Vince Gotera, go to the craft of poetry website: http://www.uni.edu/~gotera/CraftOfPoe...A Grim Tale [sestina]The floor creaks under weight. A figuredissolves at second glance. A child'simagination. Underneath, rottingcorpses lurk to feed on discarded socks.Kids sleep alone or in pairs on woodenbunk beds. Parents vanish beyond the exit.A decorated soldier stands guard at the exit.Teddy bear is sworn to protect, such a figurecan be comforting. In the corner, a woodenrocking horse provides little chance for childrento outrun aliens with large black eye sockets.Unfortunately, many children end up spoiled rottenscience experiments. Imagine smelling rottenintestines splattered all over the floor and the exit.As for the strange occurrence of missing socks,I'm told they are gobbled up. The guy they fingeredhad eight feet. Police say he poses no threat to childrenwho wear pajamas with feet. Any monster wouldget confused finding the tops of those. He wouldtug on your toes trying to get his rottenhands on your fashionable child-sized pajamas. My father says they don't existat all but no one knows for sure. I figureanything is possible, so I never wear nice socks.At hospitals everyone wears blue sticky socksthat aren't supposed to slip on tile or wood.I suppose their insurance companies figuresick people might sue. That would be a rottenthing to do. I guess that's why lawyers exist(grown-ups can't get along) even if childrennever pretend to be lawyers. Kidsmight stick their fingers in sockets.That's why little plastic plugs exist.Without them 5% of children woulddie leaving the other 95% rottingaway at dull occupations—a shocking figure—What would happen if adults tried to co-existwith ten-year-olds with rotten teeth and dirty socks?I figure we might never outgrow being children.
