Around this time of year in New England, animals awake from hibernation. This year is no exception and with the record snowfall in and around the Boston area, many creatures are happy to see most of the white stuff gone. The sun is starting to become more and more intense. I was mountain biking at Ashland State Park in Ashland, Massachusetts a few days ago and came upon a large number of Garter snakes moving slowly through the leaf litter. These snakes must have just woke up from their long winter slumber. They were searching out the small pools of sunlight that made it though the branches, warming the ground. These guys were basking in the heat from the sun. One thing I noticed was how calm they were. They seemed very groggy and disinterested in my presence. I could grab them just under the head, and hold up their bodies with my free hand. These Garter snakes did not strike or expel a stinky musk. I think they might have been half a sleep, just out from the snake hole! So I finished my 3 mile loop around the lake and when I got back to my car, I grabbed my Sony Z1U, the Letus35 Extreme and my bag of lenses. I hiked on foot back to the area full of snakes. I decided to leave the tripod. I wanted to shoot from a snake eye view. I brought all my lenses thinking I may need to keep my distance and use a long focal length. But I did not. I used my favorite lens, the full manual tack sharp Nikon 55mm f2.8 Macro. My only issue with this lens is that the focus barrel is very sticky inside and it is hard to pull and rack focus. I got down in the snake infested leaves and sticks and using no tripod, I wedged the Letus rail system into the ground trying to hold the shots steady. I was able to set the focus on the lens set to about one inch and got right in the snake’s face. Most of the shots have a thread of depth of field and a few of the shots I set my focus on just the tiny fork tongue as it flicked through the creature’s jaw. The rest of the snake’s head was out of focus. The slow motion was at 30 frames per second. I wish I had a Sony EX1 with the capability to shoot the high speed snake tongue action at 60 frames per second. But alas, I must settle for what I am able to afford (for now). I shot for about forty five minutes and got some great footage. I was never bit, and a few times, the snakes came to me. At one point I was surrounded by about ten serpents looking for their fifteen minutes of fame! The video was edited with Final Cut Pro and I used the “color corrector 3-way” filter to add more color saturation. I did not vignette this project. Soooo, this is just a short video of the characters. I used Icyprincess’s art because they're awesome! but the story is all mine. check it outtt: +++ As I gazed out to the sunlit window, my mind flowed like a lake in the spring time. The richness of the blue, the sound of water crashing together, & the mere peace of it , just reminded me of what a wonderful summer this was going to be. I glanced over at my best friend who was softly asleep.. while also drooling on my shoulder. "Taylor!", I half whispered and half screamed. "Hmm..?", she replied with some more drool. " I think we we're almost there! " I said and returned looking back out the window. We were driving up to my grandma's cottage in Texas for the summer & Taylor, my best friend since we were in diapers, was coming along. "Selena! Are you serious?! I cant wait to start our vaycay!" she said while not even trying to hide her excitement . I chuckled while she began texting her big sister in California. They were really close, which sometimes made me jealous. But then I reminded myself of how incredibly messy Taylor is. How messy her room is? Lets not even go there. As soon as we got there, it was a whole family reunion mixed with Taylor's introduction. My grandma gave her a huge hug, since I talk about her alot . I swear, I think I saw her gasping for air a little bit .. but then again, thats my family. The rest of the time we spent there, was sort of a colourful blur. The feeling I had was unexplainable. Have you ever had that feeling that your life is finally falling into place? That maybe after a gruesome juniour year in high school and a bitter divorce between your parents, that maybe.. just maybe your can finally enjoy your life? Well, I have. I didnt know it at first, but when one night I could'nt sleep, I went downstairs to make some hot cocoa for myself. I saw my grand mother sitting at the dining room table. "Grandmama?" I asked. "Ohh! Selena.. I didnt see you there." she said as if she had just been caught doing drugs. I guess she just found out about the divorce. " How are you feeling, dear? " she asked. I gazed at her & smiled. " I cant sleep. " I said truthfully yet with a little sarcasm. She looked at me in a way no one has ever looked at me before. Her beautiful emerald green eyes were searching. She rested her hand on her chin and I saw a smile forming. " What? " I asked. She took my hand and held it for a long time while locking her eyes into mine. " The reason why you cant sleep.. is because finally, reality is better than your dreams." I dont know how long we looked at eachother, but I do know that we ended it with a big hug & I ended up sleeping right beside her listening to her sing me to sleep. On the last day, I felt like crying. I really did. I had such a great time .. that I didnt want to leave. Not for one second. After the goodbye's, I helped Taylor pack the remaing suitcases. I was just about to make a joke about my grandma hugging her too hard, when she dropped. Fainted. Black-ed Out. "TAYLOR!" I screamed. Screamed so, so hard. After hours of waiting, the doctor finally came out. We were at the local hospital .. I had read every magazine & poster in the room and had satisfied my hunger with one Mr. Pepper. I ran up to him & then stopped, realizing I was some reason scared for what he was about to say. "I'm sorry. We did alot of tests to find the root of the attack and we found.. that she has a very weak heart. We dont know how long she will survive." And then.. I fainted. Wanna hear the end to this beautiful story? Rest assure, this is not like any other story.. we still have yet to see what Demi has to bring to the table. STAY TUNEDD!

AN INSTALLATION DECONSTRUCTING THE LIGHT SURGEONS TOOLS AND PROCESSES. “Stealing Beauty: British Design Now” brought together a collection of British designers who were searching for a new method and meaning in design. This cross disciplinary exhibition was curated by Claire Catterall for the ICA in London in 1999, in 2000 it was toured to the Mead Gallery in Warick. The Light Surgeons exhibit drew its inspiration for the old secondhand analogue equipment that had become their trade mark in producing their visual displays in nineties club culture. The resulting installation was a mixed media piece which combined film, slide, video, collage, print making and sculpture. Recycling old film and slide equipment as assemblage, the dyeline print artwork, 16mm film collages all fused together with an array of different projections to form an elaborate deconstruction of their processed based approach to image making; blurring the boundaries between design and art. Collaborating Artists: Chris Allen, Andy Flywheel, Rob Rainbow & Jude Greenaway.

Wild Pig (Sus scrofa) Some biologists prefer to use the term "feral pig," but strictly speaking, a feral animal is one escaped from domestication. The pigs at Coe are thought to have genes from the Russian wild boar as well as those of domestic pigs, so I don’t believe the term "feral" is applicable to this population. These pigs are not native to North America (the native peccaries of the southwest deserts are in a different family of mammals and are not found in this region). Wild pigs are quite common at Coe, and are sometimes mistaken for bears by people who hear their strange grunts and growls or who see them from the backside only. (There are no bears at Coe, the California Grizzly is long extinct.) The "Pig Problem" Visitors frequently comment on the "pig problem" at Coe Park. They see the large areas of soil overturned by pigs searching for grubs, worms, acorns and other edibles and wonder what the park is going to do about it. They are also concerned about pigs attacking people. The implied assumptions are that 1) Pigs are causing untold destruction and have no place in the area ecology, 2) Their numbers will increase until the park is devastated, 3) They are dangerous, and 4) There are practical ways to "take care" of the problem. www.coestatepark.com/wild_pig.htm .
