A Taste of Malaysia's "Cultural Diplomacy"

Kean Wong: New Yorkers and foreign diplomats are in for a special treat at the United Nations this week. Reporter Shelley Zhang has more. You might think of the United Nations as the place where diplomats discuss the most serious of international political issues. But have you ever thought about the cultural side of diplomacy? Well, Wednesday night, at the launch of the Malaysia-Melaka Food Festival, Malaysia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations showcased one of the best parts of cultural diplomacy—delicious food. The festival, hosted by the Permanent Mission, as well as Tourism Malaysia, and Perwakilan New York, is an opportunity for the organizers to share the food and culture of Malaysia with UN members and New Yorkers alike. Running from May 12th through the 23rd at the UN Delegates Dining Room, the food festival highlights how Malaysia, like the United Nations, is the product of a rich cultural stew. Organizers flew several of Malaysia's top chefs to New York for the festival, and they gave a sneak peek of their culinary masterpieces, and a workshop on Malaysian cuisine, last Sunday. A special feature of the food festival is nyonya cuisine, a unique blend of Chinese and Malaysian food. Its roots stretch back to the 15th Century, when Chinese merchants settled down in the trade port of Melaka. For celebrity chef Florence Tan, a household favorite in Malaysia and champion of nyonya cooking, the magic of nyoyna cuisine is in its literal melting pot of flavors…and cultures. [Florence Tan, Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 1:38 ) "It is so special because there are many cuisines interwoven into one cuisine, and we can have the hot, the spicy, the stir fry, many, many types of cuisine, where we have the different textures, where we use a lot of herbs, the aromatic herbs, for example we have the squashed ginger flower, and we have the kaffir lime leaves, everything that makes a special, spectacular dish." Both Chef Florence and her fellow celebrity chef Ismail were quite excited about cooking at the United Nations. ["Chef Ismail", Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 2:14 ) "To cook at the United Nations--not everybody is invited. The best thing is that the whole world is under one roof, and we are feeding the whole world under one roof, and you are very honored." [Florence Tan, Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 2:42 ) "Food brings people together, so it is an honor for me to bring our local food, nyonya cuisine, into New York, where we will share this wonderful cuisine with all the New Yorkers, with all the people around the world who work in the United Nations. And through our food, they will learn about our cuisine, our festival, our culture, our life." Datin Amy Hamidon is the president of Perwakilan and the wife of the Malaysian ambassador to the UN. She says New York is a great place to showcase Nyonya heritage. [Datin Amy Hamidon, President, Perwakilan]: (begins at 1:34 ) "For people to recognize that we have this heritage, that we have this superb, not just food, we have a lavish Baba Nyonya culture." Other organizers hope that an introduction to Malaysian cuisine will help pique people's interest in traveling to the country as well. We want to show to the world that the genuine authenticity of the food will entice visitors to come to Malaysia." Muay Thai Chaiya Fight

My first competition in a complete set of Muay Chaiya rules. The rival was my own senior, Chaan. At the first duration of 90 seconds, we started the boxing just to demonstrate to the Muay Chaiya’s styles of hurling, pressing, grabbing, and breaking. After that, we were in a real competition, and Chann defeated me by pressing his elbow on the bottom of my breastbone . His next rival was Mr. Samingwayu who was finally grabbed and broken by Chaan either. However, if it were possible, we would like the audience to see that Muay Chaiya boxers can do those styles of fighting on ground. This style had been removed since 80 years ago when Muay Kaad Chuek was forbidden. But if it had not, then there might have been many of Muay Thai boxers on the ring of UFC or MMA. We usually have this test of boxing skills in Wai Kru ceremony or in level-passing exams, so I’m thinking that I’ll get my revenge next year
