SAN-EPISODE # 2877 DATED 22 JANUARY 2009 WELCOME TO SOUTH ASIA NEWS LINE.….. I AM ARJUN CHOUDHURY WITH THE DAY’S NEWS…..THE TOP STORIES AT THIS HOUR HEADLINES 1. PAKISTAN NOW GETS ALLY CHINA TO MEDIATE WITH INDIA ON MUMBAI ATTACKS 2. SATYAM SHARES SOAR AMID EXPECTATIONS OF A BUYOUT 3. AND ……CONTINUING SNOWFALL LURES SKIERS TO KASHMIR PTC 1: NOW THE NEWS IN DETAIL..... FACED WITH MOUNTING PRESSURE FROM INDIA AND THE U.S. TO ACT TOUGH ON TERROR GROUPS OPERATING FROM ITS SOIL, PAKISTAN HAS NOW REVEALED THAT IT HAD AUTHORIZED CHINA TO NEGOTIATE WITH NEW DELHI ON ITS BEHALF TO DEAL WITH THE SIMMERING TENSIONS BETWEEN THE TWO NATIONS. VO1: Keen to bring its relations with India back on the peace track, after New Delhi launched a series of diplomatic offensives, Pakistan had turned to its close ally Beijing for help. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi speaking at a reception at the Chinese embassy in Islamabad said he had told Chinese special envoy He Yafei to negotiate with Delhi on its behalf. “The way you sent your special envoy to Islamabad and when I was seeing him off at the Foreign Office, I said to him you could go to Delhi and you have a blank cheque from us. Whatever you say Pakistan will endorse. That is the level of trust and confidence we have in you.” Qureshi said. The Chinese envoy visited Pakistan on December 29th and, during his meetings with the leaders, had indicated that Beijing would remain engaged with Islamabad to promote peace and stability in the region. Immediately after Yafei’s visit, Pakistan made two proposals for defusing tensions asking India to ”de-activate the forward airbases” and ”relocate the troops back to peace time positions”. Soon after, Yafei traveled to New Delhi on January 5th to push India to de-escalate the tensions and resume dialogue with Pakistan. Qureshi also said that Pakistan regarded its ties with China as the cornerstone of its foreign policy. The move could mark a significant shift in Islamabad’s foreign policy, more so after the new Obama administration in the US took a tough stance and linked its assistance to the Islamic nation’s commitment in the campaign against terror. PTC 2: CONSIDERING THE COMMON THREAT EMANATING FROM PAKISTAN ESPECIALLY IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MUMBAI ATTACKS, INDIA AND AFGHANISTAN HAVE DECIDED TO STEP UP INFORMATION SHARING TO DEAL WITH THE SCOURGE OF TERRORISM FACED BY BOTH COUNTRIES. VO1: Kabul vowed to support New Delhi in its fight to curb 'state sponsored' terrorism, as Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta said that there were some entities in the region that were using terrorism as a tool for foreign policy. UPSOUND/ RANGEEN DADFAR SPANTA Foreign Minister, Afghanistan TRANSCRIPTION: Afghanistan believes that in our region there are some entities that they (are) still using terrorism as a tool for foreign policy, we have to give that an end. VO2: Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee who arrived in capital Kabul on Wednesday held talks with Afghan leadership on bilateral and regional cooperation. UPSOUND/ PRANAB MUKHERJEE Foreign Minister, India TRANSCRIPTION: We also discussed about our regional and international situation and exchanged our views on the whole. These discussions were really helpful and it happened at a short interval after the visit of his Excellency the President to India where he went to express his solidarity with us after the terror attacks in Mumbai and I am highly satisfied. VO3: Strategic cooperation between the two nations has increased significantly after the bombing of Indian Embassy in Afghanistan last year. Both Kabul and New Delhi had blamed Pakistan’s “state sponsored” operatives to be behind the attacks. Analysts say India, which has until now refused to send its troops to Afghanistan to join the West’s War on Terror may now be open to such a move, if it could put pressure on Pakistan to act against the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks. PTC 3: INDIA’S SATYAM COMPUTER SERVICES HAS DECIDED TO HIRE A FINANCIAL ADVISER TO RESCUE THE COMPANY IN THE MIDST OF THE NATION’S BIGGEST ACCOUNTING FRAUD, WHICH INVESTIGATORS SAID SPREADS TO THE U.S. .MEANWHILE SHARES OF SATYAM MOVED UP AND IS ON A GAINING SPREE. IT HAS SURGED NEARLY 37 PER CENT IN THE LAST FOUR CONSECUTIVE TRADING SESSIONS. VO1: The newly appointed six-member board of Satyam Computer Services held a crucial meeting, to discuss among other things issues concerning mobilization of finances and a strategy to hold major clients. The board is also likely to consider the appointment of chief executive officer and chief financial officer; the two key posts needed to revive the company. Satyam will also hire an adviser to review options to rescue its business. JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs are among the banks short listed, sources said. Despite all, the new board said that Satyam is still a strong and viable company. The IT major’s stock which had dropped 85 per cent following the fraud, on Thursday gained 3.9 per cent at the Bombay Stock Exchange, amid expectations that the control of the beleaguered IT firm may go to some leading corporate houses. Once the fourth-largest software exporter in India, the company has been approached by potential buyers even as it struggles to raise funds and stop clients from canceling contracts after its former CEO Ramalinga Raja confessed of cooking its books for years and showing upto $1 billion of non existing funds. The former CEO had used forged documents from four banks including Citigroup Inc. and HSBC Holdings to inflate assets by over a billion dollars. In further startling revelations in the scam, Raju is said to have confessed of having padded employee numbers to siphon off over four million dollars every month from the IT company claiming that the strength of the company was 53,000 when it was actually only 40,000. PTC 4: INDIA IS IN A POSITION TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WAY THE WORLD IS MOVING AND THE GLOBAL RECESSION DOES NOT POSE A REAL THREAT TO THE NATION’S PROGRESSIVE ECONOMY, RAHUL GANDHI HAS SAID. VO1: Acknowledging the potential for growth in the country, the general secretary of the ruling Congress said he is optimistic about the country’s future as its fundamentals are very strong. Gandhi said that though the Indian economy has been impacted by the global meltdown, it would be short lived and not hinder growth. UPSOUND/ RAHUL GANDHI General Secretary, Congress TRANSLATION: World is moving towards globalization, it is moving towards connectivity and I think, medium to long term as long we keep some of our fundamentals in check, we are primary for success. So, do I worry excessively over a recession taking place, not really? Saying that, we must not ignore it, we must not just push it away like it is meaningless, it has an impact but will it actually slow us down or question our long term success, I don't think so. VO2: India has transformed itself as compared to 60 years ago and in the coming years, 50 to 60 per cent of the rural areas would be urbanized, Gandhi said. UPSOUND/ RAHUL GANDHI General Secretary, Congress TRANSLATION: When I see a recession taking place, I turn around and ask myself a very simple question. What are the fundamentals of India and the answer to that question is quite simple, we are one of the youngest population in the world, one of the largest in the world, highly trained and we have a massive capacity to train further. So we have a reservoir of talent that we can use. VO3: However analysts say India's economic growth is expected to slow down to seven percent in the financial year ending March. This is sharply lower than about nine percent in the last three years. PTC 5: AFTER PRAYER MEETINGS AND MUSIC VIDEOS, IT IS NOW THE TURN OF CRYSTAL BALL GAZERS…. THEY PREDICT NEW WARMTH IN RELATIONS BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND NEW DELHI, AFTER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA TOOK OFFICE ON TUESDAY. VO1: Astrologers in the holy city of Varanasi are brainstorming to predict the impact of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of United States. During their annual meet, astrologers from across India dwelt upon how effective his Presidency would be and what it holds for India. UPSOUND/ SHATRUGHAN TRIPATHI Astrologer, Varanasi TRANSLATION: Obama's oath taking ceremony was conducted at an auspicious time. But there are even few things that will not be favorable for him but he will overcome all the problems and emerge victorious his Presidency will also be good for India. VO2: After calculations and discussions most of the participants agreed that despite odds President Obama would outshine other US presidents. UPSOUND/ CHANDRAMOULI UPADHYAY Astrologer TRANSLATION: No opposition can harm Obama in any way and he will turn out to be a successful President. Although he will come across many obstacles, he will prove himself to be a victorious President, administrator and leader and his name will be inscribed in the pages of history. VO3: President Obama is riding a wave of hope in America and rest of the world as he ushers in an era of openness and transparency. PTC 6: SNOW IN INDIA'S NORTHERN JAMMU AND KASHMIR HAS LURED THOUSANDS, INCLUDING SEASONED SKIERS TO THE SLOPES OF THE GULMARG. THE WINTER TOURISM DESTINATION WILL HOST THE NATIONAL WINTER GAMES BY THE END OF THIS MONTH. VO1: As the stage is set for the event, a large number of sports lovers have flocked to the bowl shaped plateau. Situated at an altitude of 8500 feet in the Pir Panjal ranges, these mountains have long ridges and slopes which provide ample opportunities for sledge riding, skiing and other winter games. Tourists like Micheal who have come all way from United States say Gulmarg has some of the best ski slopes in the world. UPSOUND/MICHEAL Tourist, America TRANSCRIPTION: It's a great destination for skiing. I will urge everybody to come to Kashmir if they have the opportunity. If I compare it with east coast of United States, there we don't get a lot of good snow but here you have predictably good snow. VO2: Fresh snow fall which has enveloped the trees, houses and roads has added to the joyous atmosphere around. It has also brought cheer to the tourism industry as well. UPSOUND/ MASROOR AHMED Hotelier TRANSLATION: This season we have had good snowfall and we have seen a lot of tourist arrivals. This is good for a number of snow festivals that we host every January. We will have snow rugby, football and other such festivals. There has been a good response as we have received many tourist enquires. VO4: The introduction of the Gondola Cable Car Lift from Gulmarg to Apharwat has had a positive effect on tourism. It makes Gulmarg one of the highest lift-served ski resorts in the world. The slopes now allow a ski run of 2,213 meters. UPSOUND/ GM. DHAR Tourism In charge Kashmir TRANSLATION: The number of foreign tourists will increase if more snow falls. This place has become a craze all over the world after the second phase of Gondola Cable Car Lift has become operational. VO3: The new provincial government is drawing up plans to attract high spending tourists, thereby contributing to revival of the state’s economy which has been plagued by militancy for long. Apart from the ski slopes of Gulmarg, it is also trying to showcase the newly designed $6.2 million golf course at tourism conferences to attract wealthy golfers. CLOSING: WELL THAT’S THE WAY IT WAS IN SOUTH ASIA THIS EVENING… THE TOP STORIES ONCE AGAIN… 1. PAKISTAN NOW GETS ALLY CHINA TO MEDIATE WITH INDIA ON MUMBAI ATTACKS 2. SATYAM SHARES SOAR AMID EXPECTATIONS OF A BUYOUT 3. AND ……CONTINUING SNOWFALL LURES SKIERS TO KASHMIR THAT’S ALL IN TONIGHT’S EDITION. WE WILL SEE YOU SAME TIME TOMORROW. The Year of the Ox is supposedly a good time to get married. But those who hope to shake off the woes of 2008 could be disappointed. Singapore astrologer Tan Khoon Yong predicts another unsettled year with many man-made and natural disasters. And Barack Obama’s first year as US president might not offer the change he's promised. Tan warns stock market turbulence will continue until the middle of the year. The economy will struggle, particularly it seems in China. There may be more chaos in the Middle East too. Tan predicts the conflict in Gaza will get worse and unrest will dog neighboring nations, China, South America and Africa. Astrologers predict a challenging 12 months, but say if people stay positive and keep tempers in check; the year of the ox might pass by without too much of a ban.

Acharya Shree Yogeesh sheds light on the topic of astrology. Astrology dates back thousands of years and has been a part of Indian/Hindu culture. It is known as vedic astrology. Many people go to astrologers to figure out their horoscope and predict their lives, however, astrological predictions are false. The benefit of astrology is determining what effect the planet has on one's energy. For example, if a person doesn't have a strong Jupiter influence, that person can get a stone to increase that energy. Astrology is not meant for predictions, that is only a belief because things can change. One thing is certain, it can be used to help a person with planets and its affect on their energy. *tags* astrology, astrology advice, astrology chart, birth chart, psychic astrology, spiritual astrology, vedic astrology, tarot spiritual, constellations and astrology, star alignment, spiritual mediums, psychic mediums, psychic energy, astrology energy, chakra energy, truth about astrology, astrological predictions, spiritual predictions, astrology predictions, astrology misconceptions

Since the dawn of time, humankind has looked to the heavens for answers to earthly problems. Do the movements of the stars and planets hold the secrets of human destiny? Can the stars and planets determine one's hidden character? Over 4,000 years ago, astrology was born in the fertile crescent known as modern day Iraq and Iran. The Babylonians created the first zodiac, which basically remains unchanged today. Who were these first sky-watchers? Why did they develop astrology? Today, science denies any validity to astrology. Yet for 4,000 years, millions of people have believed in it. They point to tantalizing evidence from history: Did astrologers predict Hitler's rise to power or foretell the rise of Queen Elizabeth I? Were the three Wise Men astrologers and did they use astrology to follow the Star of Bethlehem? Has the planet-based Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world? Is belief in the power of stars merely a baseless superstition, or one of humankind's oldest truths? Scientists and scholars may be on the verge of answering these age-old questions, as they explore ASTROLOGY: SECRETS IN THE STARS.
