This clip shows how BART’s Transbay tube was constructed between Oakland and San Francisco from 1965 to 1969. From Wikipedia: The Transbay Tube is the part of BART which runs under San Francisco Bay in California and is the longest underwater tube for rapid transit in the world. The tube itself is 3.6 miles (5.7 km) long; including approaches from the nearest stations (one of which is underground), it totals 6 miles (9 km). At a maximum depth of 135 feet (41 m) below the surface, the Transbay Tube is one of the deepest vehicular tubes in service today.

Building BART - 1968 film

If you never saw San Francisco prior to 1991, when they demolished the Embarcadero Freeway, the first part of this 1968 clip shows just why this road was hated by so many. The footage was apparently shot from a helicopter, and shows how the Freeway wraps itself along the Embarcadero, obliterating the beautiful Ferry Building and cutting the city off from the Bay. Apart from that, this film promoting BART has some interesting shots of groundbreaking on Market Street. From the Prelinger Archives - in the public domain.

SF Bay Area - 1968 film

Attention San Francisco historians: can you explain the BART map at the beginning of this 1968 film? There seems to be a mysterious line extending down Market Street, ending at a station named Portal. I’ve never heard of this line, which wasn't built. Where exactly did it go to, and why wasn't it constructed? If you can overlook the nauseating folk song, this clip has a lot of very interesting footage showing construction of BART in San Francisco and the East Bay. From the Prelinger Archives - in the public domain.

I guess what they say is true: San Francisco sure is a strange place. Good thing I live in Berkeley, where everything is perfectly normal.
