Harmonica Story: I knew Kaiser loved my guitar since the "Landslide and Stand By Me" videos and the many other videos he seemed to pop in and out of, as he was vying for YouTube exposure. Never knew he'd dig the sound of the Harmonica as well when I took it out for "Blowin' in the Wind." And ever since I take my harp out, there he is just staring and listening attentively. Kaiser does have great musical tastes. Video shows extremely rare white lions and white tigers. It shows fighting, attack, stalking, hunting, roaring, playing, and male mating behavior. This video is also unusual because it shows a male lion doing a flehman lip cur. Both white lions and white tigers are extremely rare. The total number of white lions is unknown but the most recent count, in 2004, showed that only 30 were alive. White lions are Endangered. The ones shown are Siegfried and Roys White Lions of Timbavati. The white tiger, Panthera tigris, is not an albino. Its white coat and icy blue eyes are a rare expression of recessive genes. Only one out of every 10,000 tigers will display the striking black and white striped pattern. *** What produces white lions and white tigers? The white lion is sometimes found in wildlife reserves in South Africa and is a rare color mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). White lions no longer remain in the wild and very few are found in zoos. They can be up to 4 feet in height and up to almost 600 pounds White lions have never been common in the wild. They first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride’s book The White Lions of Timbavati. White cubs sometimes appear among tawny lions in the Timbavati and Kruger National Park regions. Because the gene is recessive and is masked by the normal tawny color, white lions remain rare in the wild and only occur when two lions carrying the mutant gene are mated together. White lions arent albino: the white color is caused by a recessive gene. Their color can vary from blonde through to near white, and some can also be red. They have a distinct disadvantage in nature because of their visability highly visible. White tigers with dark stripes are found in the Bengal Tiger subspecies, also called the Royal Bengal or Indian tiger, (Panthera tigris tigris or P. t. bengalensis). This coloration may also have occurred in captive Siberian Tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), and may have been reported hin several other subspecies. White fur is most closely associated with the Bengal, or Indian subspecies. Currently, several hundred captive white tigers exist worldwide with about 100 of them in India. Todays population includes both pure Bengals and hybrid BengalSiberians, but it is uncertain whether the recessive gene for white came only from Bengals, or from any of the Siberian ancestors. How are lions and tigers different? Tigers are larger. They live in Asia. Lions live in Africa, but once lived in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Lions and tigers can cross breed and offspring are called liger or tigon. When compared to orange tigers without the white gene, white tigers generally are larger at birth and at full adult size. This may have given them advantages in the wild. Lions are the dominant predator on the African savanna. They are losing habitat. White lions and tigers are regarded by some as divine. The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, is the second-oldest zoo in the US and is located in Ohio. It opened in 1875: 14 months after the Philadelphia Zoo. The Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in this country, dating from 1875. It is currently ranked 4th in the country.
