He was the main British-based R&B singer / songwriter of the 1980s.[3] He waited seven years after scoring his first four UK top 20 successes, before accumulating a series of transatlantic successes, including three U.S. number ones.[3] He was born in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago to Grenadian parents, and moved to England with his family at the age of eight.[2] Oceans' musical influence came at an early age of his life, as his father was a musician, and realised he was inline to follow those ambitions as he was growing up. During his teenage years, he sang regularly in London clubs[2] while also working as a tailor in London’s Savile Row.[4] He released his first single in 1972 on Spark Records as Les Charles. When in Trinidad as a boy he adopted the name Billy Ocean, taking the surname from the local football team 'Ocean's Eleven', who had gotten the name from the famous film of the same name. The next year, 1976, was when he recorded his first album, Billy Ocean, with its first single release, "Love Really Hurts Without You," charting at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart and number 22 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. More successes ensued, including "L.O.D. (Love On Delivery)". He also wrote songs for other artists, such as La Toya Jackson.[2] In 1981, he scored the U.S. R&B chart with "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)". Jodeci If Boyz II Men are portrayed as a clean-cut, wholesome R&B vocal group, then Jodeci’s wild, sexual, bad-boy image represents the other side of the coin. Made up of two sets of brothers, the group's name is a consolidation of three members' aliases: "JoJo" Hailey, Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate, and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey; the group also includes Dalvin DeGrate. Natives of Charlotte, NC, all four members toured the South as young boys singing gospel music, even recording albums; both families belonged to the Pentecostal church, and the DeGrates' father was a minister. The boys were able to hear each other's gospel songs played on the radio, and eventually were introduced through girlfriends as teenagers. However, when they did meet, K-Ci was with a girl Dalvin had been dating, and a fight nearly broke out. It was this album which established Anita Baker as a world-wide musical tour de force and a household name. It was also this album that afforded her the opportunity to stretch her skills; she wrote "Been So Long", "Watch Your Step" and "Sweet Love". "Sweet Love", "Caught Up In the Rapture", "No One In The World", and "Same Ole Love" became major R&B and Adult Contemporary chart hits during 1986 and 1987, with "Sweet Love" becoming a top ten pop hit as well. By the time "Rapture" had completed its chart run, it had sold 6 million copies worldwide and also earned Baker two Grammys.

Chuck Jackson is an R&B singer who was one of the first artists to successfully record material by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. He has performed with moderate success since 1961. His hits include "I Don't Want to Cry," "Any Day Now," and "I Keep Forgettin'." He was born on 22 July 1937 in Latta, South Carolina, but was raised in Pittsburgh. He was "discovered" when he opened for soul legend Jackie Wilson at the Apollo Theater. He signed a recording contract with Scepter Records. His first single, "I Don't Want to Cry", which he co-wrote, was his first hit (1961). The song charted on both the R&B and pop charts. In 1962, Jackson's recording of "Any Day Now", the Burt Bacharach-Bob Hilliard classic, became a huge hit. In 1967, Jackson moved from Scepter to Motown Records, where he recorded a number of successful singles, including "Are You Lonely for Me" and "Honey Come Back." King, Arthur Conley, Solomon Burke Representative Album: "Soul Clan" Biography A short-lived but legendary supergroup comprised of some of the biggest names in '60s soul, the Soul Clan’s proper recording career amounted to a mere two songs, but the act's lineup was enough to make any R&B aficionado take notice: Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley, Don Covay, Ben E. King, and Joe Tex. At the height of their fame, Burke, Covay, Tex, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett (all of whom recorded either for Atlantic Records or its affiliated labels) were good friends, often toured together, and would sometimes pop up at each other's shows. Both Burke and Covay began bandying around the idea of working together as a show of musical solidarity; Burke saw the collaboration as a stepping stone toward building an autonomous African-American business empire, while Covay, more successful as a songwriter than a performer, hoped to promote his own career alongside those of his friends. While the idea simmered for some time, it wasn't until 1968 that the project finally took flight; by this time, Redding had died in a tragic airplane crash and Pickett developed cold feet, supposedly uncomfortable with Burke's grandiose financial plans, so Conley and King stepped in to replace them. The group recorded a single, "Soul Meeting" b/w "That's How I Feel," which was intended as a trailer for a later album and tour, but the single failed to make a serious impression on the charts, and Atlantic pulled their financing toward further recording (Burke has subsequently said he believes Atlantic purposefully let the record fail to prevent the artists from gaining too much power). The Doobie Brothers is een Amerikaanse rockband. De band werd opgericht in 1969 en kende veel personeelswisselingen. De kern van de band wordt gevormd door de zangers/gitaristen Tom Johnston en Pat Simmons. Oud-leden van de band zijn onder meer zanger Michael McDonald, gitarist Jeff Baxter en saxofonist Cornelius Bumpus. De band is vooral bekend van hun hits Long Train Running, What a Fool Believes en Listen to the Music. De band verkocht alleen in de VS al meer dan twintig miljoen albums [bewerk] Geschiedenis De band werd in 1969 opgericht door gitarist en schrijver Tom Johnston en drummer John Hartman. Ze werden aan elkaar voorgesteld door Skip Spence, de gitarist van Moby Grape die voorheen deel uitmaakte van Jefferson Airplane. Johnston en Hartman begonnen een band genaamd Pud en experimenteerden met allerlei muzikale stijlen terwijl ze in en rond San Jos optraden.
