California Supreme Court Arguments on Same-Sex Marriage

The California Supreme Court hears oral arguments on six cases challenging the constitutionality of the California's state law limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples. The plaintiffs, which include couples who wish to marry, argued that a ban on marriages between people of the same sex is discrimination and unconstitutional. Lawyers for the state who want to uphold the law urged justices to respect the tradition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and said voters should approve changes.

Second Circuit Court of Appeals Oral Argument: Fox Television v. FCC

Fox Television is challenging the FCC's indecency standards and the way it punishes broadcasters for airing shows that contain profanity.

The U.S. Supreme Court hears oral argument in the case Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education. Crystal Meredith is the plantiff. Her son's Louisville, Kentucky, school district requires most schools to maintain a black enrollment of 15 percent to 50 percent. Court will decide what role race can be used when assigning students to K-12 schools in an effort to achieve diversity.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals hears oral argument in the case of Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District. The Seattle School Board adopted a plan to assign students to schools on the basis of race in an effort to overcome the effects of segregated housing patterns. Parents of children who were not assigned to the school they chose sued, questioning the validity of both the desegregation plan. The previous year, a three-judge panel for the 9th Circuit ruled that the plan violated students' rights to equal treatment.
