Fifty years after a failed uprising against Chinese rule forced the Dalai Lama into exile, Chinese and Tibetan communities remain deeply polarized. Tibetan monks debate ancient Buddhist scriptures. Round the corner, workmen install extra security cameras on the rooftop of Kumbum monastery. Authorities are taking no chances on the anniversary of the 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. Matt Whitticase, Press Officer for Free Tibet, "In 2009, 50 years after the flight of the Dalai Lama, Tibetans are living under de-facto martial law, all their most basic and cherished freedoms denied, impossible in places even to have a photograph of the Dalai Lama in their house or their monasteries, and impossible to worship at certain times because the Chinese just ban it." The Dalai Lama accuses China of bringing "hell on earth" to his homeland and causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people. Chinese authorities maintain they "liberated" Tibet from serfdom and deny reports of human rights abuse. Qin Gang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, "Whether it is in the Tibet Autonomous Region, or in other Tibetan areas, local authorities all govern according to the law and abide by the laws, what has been mentioned, torture, does not exist." The Dalai Lama retains enormous support among the six million Buddhist Tibetans who live in China. He advocates non-violence and greater autonomy within China. But Tibet’s spiritual leader is 73 years old and in frail health, and many wonder what will happen next. Tenzin Choeying, National Director, Students for a Free Tibet, “We have led a non-violent movement for a very long time. And what we now see is an escalation of tension inside Tibet, and Tibetans are really frustrated.” The 50th anniversary of the uprising comes at a sensitive time for Tibet, a year after widespread anti Chinese riots. After decades of direct Chinese rule, the situation is tense, and Tibetan and Chinese communities remain deeply polarized.
