A hazardous life for refugees in French coastal town of Calais.

A new French film opening Wednesday, "Welcome", has stirred up controversy about illegal migrants trying to cross from France to Britain. AFPTV went to the French coastal town of Calais, where hundreds of refugees try to make the hazardous crossing into Britain. They call it the jungle. A no-man’s land only a few hundred metres away from the Channel Tunnel. Hundreds of refugees live in these desolate woods. In makeshift camps, with no water or electricity. Adnian, Afghan Refugee, “For one month I am here. In one month we've been here in the camp, in the jungle, and, in one month, I've never washed my body. No place, no water to wash body." More than six years after the closure of the immigrant holding centre near Calais, border police still stop illegal immigrants, mostly Afghans and Iraqis - on a daily basis. Sylvie Copyans, Salam Aid Organisation, “Police know the jungle so they come often to arrest them. Usually it's always the same thing: they gas inside the huts to make them come out, they take them out, they handcuff them and send them to the local police centre." Aid organisations try to ease these refugees' ordeal with meals, clothing and legal help for those seeking asylum. But as night falls, most will try to hide on trucks bound for Britain. Amanullah, Afghan refugee, “I don't have a chance. Every night two, 10 persons, 12, 15 persons, 20 persons go to England” Sometimes they stop me, yes, because they kick me from the truck.” Migrants who are caught are sent to a detention centre nearby, but never for long. France no longer deports them and cannot hold them indefinitely, so they're soon back to square one. Ready to try their luck again.

On Monday night, Hollywood's brightest stars left the glamour of Hollywood and came out to Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco to lend their support to the late legendary screen actor Paul Newman's children's charity, The Painted Turtle. ET has superstars Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks re-telling their favorite Newman stories at the star-studded event. "We can talk about him as a movie star, an actor -- it's nothing compared to what he did as a man," Hanks tells ET about Newman. "He taught everybody in the spectrum of show business what you can do." Watch the stars tell ET about the humanitarian behind those famous blue eyes. Just weeks after Newman's passing, Roberts and Hanks joined Rita Wilson, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Robin Wright Penn, Sean Penn, Jack Nicholson and many other celebs to perform a staged reading of The World of Nick Adams by Ernest Hemingway, and adapted for the stage by A.E. Hotchner. The Painted Turtle is part of Paul Newman's "Hole In The Wall California Camp" which benefits children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Painted Turtle Camp, as well as The Painted Turtle Outpost, which tries to create a similar "camp" experience at local California hospitals.
