New Technologies Help Make Coal More Environmentally Responsible According to a recent study, the U.S. has approximately 200 years of coal reserves and 50% of America’s power already comes from coal. Industry experts say clean coal plants mean less reliance on foreign sources of energy and more jobs. But how clean is "clean coal"? Unlike the coal plants of the past that used combustion to burn coal, today's plants are using new technologies, like gasification, to transform coal into useful byproducts. Gasification is a chemical process that captures the CO2 in coal making it a more environmentally responsible form of power. Ivan Stiefel Speaks at 2008 Brower Youth Awards

Ivan spearheaded the creation of an alternative spring break for university students to stand in solidarity with communities affected by coal industry abuses in Appalachia. In 2007, the West Virginia Mountain Justice Spring Break (MJSB) focused on securing a safe school for the children who attend Marshfork Elementary, which lies only 50 yards from a coal silo. Just beyond the silo is a coal processing plant, a leaking coal slurry impoundment, and mountaintop removal mines. During the Spring Break Program, the West Virginia Surface Mines appeal board released a decision that would allow for a second silo to be built right next to the school. The week culminated in a sit-in at the office of the governor of West Virginia, where Ivan was among those occupying the office, demanding that the governor build a safe new school for the children of Marshfork. The occupation ended in 13 arrests but the governor made no commitments. In March 2008, the Mountain Justice Spring Break traveled to Wise County, Virginia, and Meigs County, Ohio in protest of further coal projects and coal-fired power plants. Ivan created the Virginia Spring Break’s schedule. In Ohio, he coordinated community service projects and two "listening projects" to identify community concerns, while acting as lead negotiator with the CEO of an electric utilities company. MJSB "has furthered the movement for environmental justice, climate justice and a just transition away from coal," Ivan said.

Poland is one of the largest producers of coal in Europe and not coincidentally, also one of the continent’s most polluted countries. The Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Poland, where coal has been mined for more than 150 years, is thick with mines, steel mills, coke ovens and chemical plants. Waste from these industries fills hundreds of dumps across the region. Smoke from coal-fired plants pollutes the air. Runoff from the mines has contaminated the groundwater, streams and lakes. Underground exploration has caused irreparable damage to the landscape. In Poland, 93 percent of the energy comes from burning coal?a major producer of greenhouse gases. Despite the reforms of the last decade, coal mining remains a dangerous and dirty business.

This reliance on coal raises a score of questions about people, land, and a region's future.
