Vesa Toskala Saved 35 Shots and Stajan Blocked a couple of shots. rookie Anton Stralman Scored His First NHL goal and collected another assist to help out the Leafs win. Stajan, Tucker and Blake Also Scored. The Leafs' Playoff Hopes Are still aliveGame RE-CAP(NHL.COM):BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Even without captain Mats Sundin, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still alive in the playoff chase.Vesa Toskala stopped 35 shots, and Matt Stajan had a goal, an assist and prevented a goal by blocking Ales Kotalik's shot headed for a wide-open net, in a 4-1 win over the perplexing Buffalo Sabres on Friday night."Everybody's written us off when we lost Mats," Stajan said, referring to Sundin, who missed his third straight game with a groin injury. "We're not going to die in here. We're going to keep going until it's over."The win, the Leafs' fourth in five games, moved Toronto within five points of Boston for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff berth. The Maple Leafs also won their fifth straight road game, the team's best string since closing the 2003-04 season with a similar run.The Sabres' playoff push took a hit. In having a three-game winning streak snapped, Buffalo lost ground, dropping to 10th, a point behind Washington after the Capitals beat Atlanta."We have to take care of our own business," coach Lindy Ruff said. "There's nothing we can do looking at the outside anymore."Buffalo was undone by an inept power play, and failed to build off a 7-4 win against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, a game in which the Sabres scored six unanswered third-period goals.Jason Blake and Darcy Tucker scored four minutes apart in the first period to put the Maple Leafs up 2-0. After Thomas Vanek cut the deficit to 2-1 in the opening minute of the second, rookie Anton Stralman regained the Maple Leafs' two-goal edge midway through the frame by scoring his first career goal. Stajan sealed the win, converting his own rebound with 7 minutes left."We've kind of dug ourselves into a hole," Sabres forward Jason Pominville said. "We have to make sure we get a good start, because when you don't get a lead, teams are patient and it's tough to come back."It was even tougher for the Sabres to mount a comeback when their power play failed to produce. Buffalo converted 1-of-8 opportunities and failed to score on three two-man advantages, including a 2-minute stretch in the second period during which the Leafs were penalized three times."We had our chances, we didn't bear down enough and didn't execute, and that gave them a little bit of momentum," Sabres forward Drew Stafford said.Toskala did his part, stopping 28 shots through 40 minutes, and then making two key saves in the third period - both times foiling Pominville.Toskala's most acrobatic save came with 10:50 left, when he got a piece of Pominville's hard and bouncing shot from the right boards, but the puck had enough momentum to dribble past him. Toskala reached back with his stick and swept the puck out of the crease inches before it crossed the goal line. With 3 minutes left, Toskala made a key glove save, stopping Pominville on a short-handed breakaway.Give Stajan an assist, too, in the goaltending department. With Toskala out of position after stopping Derek Roy from in close, Stajan kicked out his shin to deflect Kotalik's shot during Buffalo's two-man advantage early in the second period.Anything to help."I think Vesa makes enough saves for us," said Stajan, who was credited with four blocked shots.Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice sensed the boost his team got in winning a game without not only Sundin, but also Nik Antropov (knee) and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo (groin)."That's a great confidence-booster, and I don't think you can manufacture that kind of confidence that comes from success like that," Maurice said.Notes: Sabres C Tim Connolly's season is over after the team announced he'll have surgery next week to remove bone spurs in his hip that have been nagging him for the past three months. ... The Leafs, 7-0-1 in their past eight road games, play at Ottawa on Saturday. ... Pominville had an assist on Vanek's goal, extending his point streak to four games (three goals, seven assists).Three star selections: 1st: VESA TOSKALA 2nd: MATT STAJAN 3rd: ANTON STRALMAN

Leafs win this baby by the score of 3-1. Hockeyisasport messaged(msged) me and said he was at the game. Sundin, Antropov and Steen scored to win it. Toskala played outstanding only getting scored on once. Next game for the leafs, Monday, Feb 25/08 VS our Arch rivals, the Sens.GAME RE-CAP(NHL.COM):TORONTO (AP) -Mats Sundin's love for Toronto will last. His career with the Maple Leafs might soon be over, though. The Leafs' captain scored an early goal in what could have been his final game for Toronto, a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night. + Click for larger photo"No matter what happens I'll always love Toronto and I'm going to love the Toronto Maple Leafs," Sundin said. "It's been my home for the last 13 years and that's never going to change."I hope people respect whatever decision's going to come out of this."Alex Steen and Nik Antropov had third-period goals in the Maple Leafs' last home game before Tuesday's trade deadline and Sundin is expected to meet agent J.P. Barry in Ottawa on Sunday to discuss the no-movement clause in his contract that interim GM Cliff Fletcher wants him to waive.Despite acknowledging that request, Sundin sounds content to finish the season in Toronto rather than accept a trade elsewhere."I never believed in rental players to start with," he told reporters after Saturday's morning skate. "I think if you want to be part of the team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup or a team that is going far in the playoffs, my opinion has always been that you want to be there from training camp or the start of the season to be part of the group."Mark Recchi scored for the Thrashers, who hurt their already marginal playoff chances."If you can't beat one of the worst teams in the conference, we don't deserve it," Bobby Holik said. "There's no room for excuses. Those are facts. We all know that we lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, and what else is there to say? We weren't good enough to win. We weren't good enough in any aspect of the game."Sundin has been in Toronto since being acquired in a June 1994 trade.Steen's goal at 2:53 of the third period stood up as the winner. One day after signing a two-year contract extension, he raced in on the wing and backhanded a shot over Kari Lehtonen's left shoulder to make it 2-1. Antropov scored an insurance goal at 12:44."Whatever he does he's well-supported by the guys in here," said Steen. "We want him to stay."But he has done so much for this organization and this city for so long. It's a choice that he has to make."Recchi opened the scoring for Atlanta at 11:54 of the first period during a power play. He was standing alone at the side of the goal and banged in a rebound off a Marian Hossa shot for his 12th goal of the season.Sundin tied it 1-1 at 3:53 of the second period after a nifty play by Kyle Wellwood. The Leafs winger passed the puck from the high slot and the captain one-timed it by Lehtonen for his 25th of the season - and perhaps the final of his career in blue and white.Notes: In 970 career games with the Maple Leafs, Sundin has 413 goals, 558 assists and 971 points ... Toronto finished the season series with a record of 3-0-1 against the Thrashers ... Recchi has 28 points (10-18) in 34 games since being picked up on waivers by Atlanta earlier this season ... Antropov's goal was the 100th of his career ... Vesa Toskala started for the 19th time in the past 20 games3 STARS OF THE GAME:3- Mats Sundin2- Alex Steen1- Nik Antropov
