It started as a great day. Cool air and sun. We got to the track by 8:30am and finally got in and unloaded by 9:30. We had a check list of things to go over before making any runs. One of which was to make sure the 2-step was setup properly. When Jeremy fired the car up and tested the 2 step I noticed a bit of moisture come out of the left tailpipe along with some light white smoke. I honestly thought it may just have been from the car sitting overnight, the cold weather and the 2-step loading up the cylinders with fuel. I really didn’t think anything more than that as the car ran great on the dyno and I had no other reason to believe there was an issue. So we headed to the staging lanes. Lowered the tire pressure to 14psi and made our attempt at our first run with the new setup. The 2-step was set at 3500rpm's and immediately blew the tires off. The track prep was crap and I'm sure the cold weather didn't help. Since it was such a horrible launch Jeremy shut down even before shifting into 2nd and aborted the run. Since the car was still cool he rolled back around and got into the staging lane again. Waited a bit for our class and then stepped up again. This time the 2 step set a little lower. Launched the car. Same thing. Blew the tires right off finally got back into it by granny shifting into 2nd and then stayed in it through 3rd and 4th. We obviously didn't expect much due to the launch and slow shift into 2nd. The run yielded a 10.40@138 and change. I don't have the slip but the 60ft and 1/8 time and 1/8mph weren't anything special. When Jeremy came back around from that run he told me he noticed some white smoke out the drivers side exhaust when he let out of it after the 1/4 mile mark. At this point we started getting concerned as even though the launch was junk we should have seen a faster mph for the power we're making. Dodge has announced the 2010 Viper ACR (American Club Racer) has reclaimed the production car lap record at Laguna Seca, ahead of the car’s unveiling at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Driven by engineer Chris Winkler, the Viper SRT10 ACR set a lap record of 1:33.915 (1:33.944 - as unofficially recorded by a trackside clock). This means the car traveled around the 2.238-mile track 1.1 seconds faster than the previous production car record holder, the Devon GTX. According to Winkler, "It was definitely exciting but a somewhat uneventful lap overall from behind the steering wheel. The Dodge Viper ACR has amazing power and handles like a dream, so following my first practice here last month, I came away pretty confident that we'd be able to set a new record." Boasting a massive 8.4-liter V10 engine, with 600 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque, the Viper ACR accelerates from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds and has a top speed of 184 mph. Updated for 2010, the car features a shorter fifth gear ratio, a new short-throw shifter, and a revised rear wing. Other goodies include aluminum control arms, a KW suspension with two-way adjustable competition coil-over shock absorbers, two-piece slotted StopTech brake rotors, and an optional Hard Core Package with a track-oriented suspension and an 80 pound weight reduction (compared to the standard Viper SRT10). With the Viper entering its final year of production, only 500 models will be built. Despite this, Dodge's President and CEO, Ralph Gilles, stated "We're going to keep Dodge's performance icon alive and well by not only producing some of the most special Vipers ever built, but we're also investigating what the next-generation Viper is going to be." If you’ve ever been lucky enough to drive a 430 Scuderia and thought you'd reached motoring nirvana, then I'm afraid the world has just moved on. The Ferrari 458 Italia makes that car very old school... The latest all-new Ferrari is the most useable yet - a racer for the road but with more than a nod in the direction of GT talents as well. To that end, there's a dual-clutch gearbox as standard, complete with full auto mode, as well as adaptive damping, a 4.5-litre V8 which revs to 9,000rpm and produces 570bhp and 398lb ft, a steering rack with two turns lock to lock, plus the usual electronic trick diff. Suffice to say, it's neither slow nor boring. The noise is epic (we found a long tunnel and it sounded like we were sat slap bang in the middle of an F1 car because the exhaust baffles open at 2,500rpm) and the way the pace builds through all the gear changes is far too addictive to be legal. These are seriously quick up and down shifts, although not quite as mechanical and brutal as the F1 gearbox on the Scuderia. But the single best thing about this 458 is that it's not intimidating. Switch the adaptive damping to the Bumpy Road' setting and there isn't a supercar out there which rides as well. And because everything is so intuitive - from the steering to the gearbox, even the satnav controls - you feel immediately at home in it. Nothing shocks, nothing surprises. The whole thing feels modern. If we're going to be honest, the Scuderia wore its technology rather reluctantly. But the 458 has been designed with it from the outset, so even the satnav now feels like a proper satnav system, not some botched after-market thought. Perhaps the greatest compliment we can pay the 458 is that it no longer feels like it needs a Challenge Stradale or Scuderia version. The 458 does it all. And does it bloody well.
