Although it looks similar to grimthorpe&apos;s gravity escapement, it actually differs in this one very important detail.  In the grimthorpe, the pendulum has to unlock the escapement, and the unlocking friction will depend on the torque imposed by the train.  In the arnfield, the impulsing arm itself unlocks the escapement, having been left behind by the pendulum, so any variation in unlocking does not reach the pendulum.  Consequently this escapement should give very consistent impulses to the pendulum and if combined with a compensated pendulum, should give excellent timekeeping.</description>
