Snake Eye View - Letus Extreme Macro Film - HDTV

Around this time of year in New England, animals awake from hibernation. This year is no exception and with the record snowfall in and around the Boston area, many creatures are happy to see most of the white stuff gone. The sun is starting to become more and more intense. I was mountain biking at Ashland State Park in Ashland, Massachusetts a few days ago and came upon a large number of Garter snakes moving slowly through the leaf litter. These snakes must have just woke up from their long winter slumber. They were searching out the small pools of sunlight that made it though the branches, warming the ground. These guys were basking in the heat from the sun. One thing I noticed was how calm they were. They seemed very groggy and disinterested in my presence. I could grab them just under the head, and hold up their bodies with my free hand. These Garter snakes did not strike or expel a stinky musk. I think they might have been half a sleep, just out from the snake hole! So I finished my 3 mile loop around the lake and when I got back to my car, I grabbed my Sony Z1U, the Letus35 Extreme and my bag of lenses. I hiked on foot back to the area full of snakes. I decided to leave the tripod. I wanted to shoot from a snake eye view. I brought all my lenses thinking I may need to keep my distance and use a long focal length. But I did not. I used my favorite lens, the full manual tack sharp Nikon 55mm f2.8 Macro. My only issue with this lens is that the focus barrel is very sticky inside and it is hard to pull and rack focus. I got down in the snake infested leaves and sticks and using no tripod, I wedged the Letus rail system into the ground trying to hold the shots steady. I was able to set the focus on the lens set to about one inch and got right in the snake’s face. Most of the shots have a thread of depth of field and a few of the shots I set my focus on just the tiny fork tongue as it flicked through the creature’s jaw. The rest of the snake’s head was out of focus. The slow motion was at 30 frames per second. I wish I had a Sony EX1 with the capability to shoot the high speed snake tongue action at 60 frames per second. But alas, I must settle for what I am able to afford (for now). I shot for about forty five minutes and got some great footage. I was never bit, and a few times, the snakes came to me. At one point I was surrounded by about ten serpents looking for their fifteen minutes of fame! The video was edited with Final Cut Pro and I used the “color corrector 3-way” filter to add more color saturation. I did not vignette this project. Music Selection: Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I - Track 6

The per-car entrance fee, in August 2009, was $6. This video covers about two minutes of driving within the park. Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated 1935. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone formations and stark beauty of the Mojave Desert.

Cell Phone Radiation And Brain Cancer

http://www.emfnews.org Airtube Headset Yet another study finds that there may be a link between cell phone radiation and brain cancer. A new study, published by The Daily Mail, claims that as little as 10 minutes of exposure to radiation from your mobile phone can cause chemical changes in brain cells that can lead to cancer. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel have observed that short-term exposure to low-level mobile phone radiation (at 875Mhz – similar to wireless network frequencies) can trigger a chemical switch within the human and rat cells that controls how the cell divides. Until now, the effect of radiation on the brain has been considered from a thermal standpoint – does it heat the brain enough to cause damage? But this new study concentrates on the chemical triggers that have been linked to other cancers and represents a new “non-thermal” link to cancer. Dr. Simon Arthur, a health expert at Dundee University, said the effect was ‘unlikely to cause cancer.” Still, anything that messes with the way a cell divides is worrisome to us – afterall, cancer results from uncontrolled cell division/growth. Pick up a headset, Bluetooth or wired, and use it as much as possible. It may not turn out to cause cancer, but what if it does? Better safe than sorry – really, really sorry.
The Freedom to Shoot Dumb Videos and Other Important Things

(Shot with the cell phone, using my shoe tripod and the handy pivot toe, with the deck lens cover, but without a car filter.) Here is a blog-like posting that may not be much better than the accompanying video. There is a quote from my elementary school years and a quote from my mission years that have had an impact on what I do and how I think. We studied American History and Government in the Sixth Grade. My school was on an experimental program in which the 5th & 6th Grades were set up like the US government. We had a President & Vice President in the Executive Branch, a Supreme Court where students argued their guilt or innocence for violating school rules, and a Congress with a House and Senate instead of a Student Council. Each class was set up as a city. We chose our own city name. We threw the teacher off when we chose Transylvania, but since the name was chosen in a landslide election he did not suggest a recount or veto our decision. I suggested the name and was elected to the City Council and later as Mayor for my contributions. Each row was a street. I was on Vampire Vein Lane. Each row had a "street sign" on the front desk. One of the more artistic students in my row made a sign with lots of veins and bright red blood splotches. A few days later the Principal walked into our class and, without saying a word, tore up our street sign. Apparently one of the other teachers had complained. Our teacher excused himself and went with the Principal. We sat quietly in the class - we were actually quite serious about school, and that class did not have many goof offs. The teacher returned about ten minutes later, apologized that the Principal tore up our sign, and told us that we could keep the name of our street as long as the new sign was less visual. We spent time talking about different forms of government, and did a lot of comparisons of democracy vs. communism. We even read some of the writing of Marx and Lenin, with our parents permission, so we would have a basis for our discussions - pretty unusual for a class of Sixth Graders in Utah. Near the end of the first semester we had a series of discussions about the different kinds of freedom we enjoyed. After going through all of the freedoms that are part of the typical curriculum, our teacher said there were a couple of freedoms no one had mentioned. We spent a few minutes trying to guess what he was talking about and once he saw we weren’t getting any closer, he said the following: "We have the freedom to do dumb things, and the freedom to fail." My sixth grade teacher taught us to think. I'm not sure how often teachers are able to do that in these days with end-of-grade tests and other mandates, so I consider myself fortunate to have been in school during the era when I attended. The next quote came about ten years later while I was in Michigan on my church mission. The Bloomfield Hills Stake President, a lay leader who was a surgeon, gave a talk at a conference in which he said: "Happiness does not come in doing the things we like to do, but in liking the things we have to do." This has been a good weekend for being dumb and liking the things I had to do. It has been grey and rainy. I am one of those people who has a mild case of Seasonal Affective Disorder - SAD - grey & cold weather get me down. It's one reason I moved from Utah. I did not like the winters with snow that could start in late September and go into May some years. If this was Camelot and I could dictate the weather and my activities, I would choose a bright sunny day at the beach with visits to a lighthouse or a historic fort. Instead, I’ve done exciting things like getting a hair cut, cleaning the house, taking the trash and recycling to the county drop site, shopping, and laundry. However, I've been quite happy doing chores, taking it easy, staying around home most of the past two days, being mostly lazy, and spending lots of time with Jake and the cats. The pets are happy to have me around. I stretched out in the hall Friday evening and had six cats walking around and on me for about half an hour. I was kind of tired so I took a nap late this morning. I thought it was nice to have the freedom to take a nap because I felt like taking a nap. Ethan and Iris snuggled on my right side and Moe rested on my left side. This afternoon I spent an hour outside with Jake, shooting dumb photos and videos. Jake had a nice time - he is a quiet dog who does not look for too much excitement. Last week was a 55+ hour week at work. The previous week was over 60 hours, and the week before that was a four day work week of over 50 hours, with Columbus day as a holiday. I don't have the option of being "dumb" or "failing" at work. I am working on some major assignments that have important short term and long term impact. But at home this weekend, I got to be dumb. And even though this wasn't necessarily the best weekend for photos or videos, I even had fun shooting poor to mediocre quality images. I am happy not because I did the things I would prefer to do, but I enjoyed doing the things I had to do and that were available for me to do. I’m logging off now to spend more time with the pets plus do my favorite chore - scoop the litter boxes. That really makes the cats happy. I may log on later and check out some of the photos I took and do another posting. Here is hoping that each of you had a happy and good weekend, whether you did "smart" or "dumb" things and whether you “succeeded” or “failed.”
