iReport — DeDe Scozzafava, a moderate Republican candidate for Upstate NY’s 23RD District for U.S. House of Representatives was "handed her hat and showed the door" by national conservative opposition in the GOP. Ms. Scozzafava said, Saturday morning, she was suspending her campaign in the face of collapsing support and a lack of campaign finances. Really? She appeared in tears as she was asked for the reason. Although, she did not say, it was pretty clear that it was not by her own choice. Conservatives have brought an unknown candidate to the 23RD District, Doug Hoffman, and presented him as "one of us". Those of "US" in the North Country know otherwise. Ms. Scozzafava had been under siege from conservative leaders because she supported gay rights and abortion rights and was considered too liberal on various fiscal issues. " "Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker — had argued that local parties should be permitted to pick candidates that most closely mirror the sentiments of the district, even if those candidates vary from Republican orthodoxy on some issues." " They're trying to bang 435 elections across the United States into the same mold,” said James Ellis, chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party. “It’s a detriment to democracy.” DeDe is from here and represented this district well in Albany. She was tuned into the needs of the area. Doug Hoffman hasn't a clue about the local needs. What the Conservative Wing of the GOP makes clear from their support of Doug Hoffman, is that the National Agenda of the Conservatives takes precedent over the local needs of this community. Everyone should pay particular attention to the implications of this move. When Republicans say they don't want more Government control, they just tipped their hand.
