Obama awards the Medal of Honor to Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti for "conspicuous gallantry" in Afghanistan. Sgt. Monti was slain on the battlefield attempting a rescue of a fallen fellow soldier. The award was accepted by his parents.

Celebrating its 33rd anniversary, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement is one of the premier awards honoring work in environmental science, energy and medicine of worldwide importance, and consists of a $200,000 cash award as well as a solid 10kt. gold medallion. The 2006 awards were conferred during a program on the USC campus on April 27, 2006 to Dr. David W. Schindler of the University of Alberta, and Dr. Igor A.Shiklomanaov of the State Hydrological Institute in St. Petersburg.
