Although back in 1959, that number was much, much smaller. Reporter Kate Schell speaks to one woman who was a part of the very first class. For Sister JoAnn Krebsbach this is where it all began.... andamp;quot;I came to join the sistersandamp;quot; She enrolled at Mary College in 1959 to join the community of sisters. Back then, only women were allowed in. andamp;quot;When we were going to school we came to go to this school because we were joining. So we came from our parishes to join and the school was starting so we went to school here.andamp;quot; says Sister JoAnn Krebsbach/Univ. Mary. Because the school was only open to women, two majors were offered. andamp;quot;We started out the two basic things were teaching or nursing. So I remember being asked which do you want to do and so I started out in teaching.andamp;quot; she says. The students working to be sisters lived on campus although not all students of Mary College were joining the community. Those women lived downtown. Sister JoAnn remembers them. andamp;quot;A whole class of freshmen came and they stayed at Bonifice Hall and they would come out on the yellow school bus, you know, for classes.andamp;quot; Over the past 50 years the University of Mary has grown tremendously.In 1959, this was the only building on campus. It wasn’t until about a decade later that more buildings were added. andamp;quot;We began with four buildings and we were very fortunate because the same architecht who designed these buildings, Marcel Broyer was still living.
