THE U-S SUPREME COURT HAS AGREED TO HEAR ARGUMENTS ABOUT WHETHER BANNING SUCH VIDEOS VIOLATES PEOPLE’S FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. CRIS ORNELAS IS HERE WITH WHAT NEW MEXICO'S ATTORNEY GENERAL IS DOING TO TRY TO GET THE VIDEOS OUTLAWED. THIS ALL STEMS BACK TO A PENNSYLVANIA MAN WHO WAS CONVICTED FOR MAKING AND SELLING VIDEOS OF DOGFIGHTS. HE APPEALED HIS CONVICTION AND AN APPEALS COURT JUDGE TOOK HIS SIDE. THE JUDGE THERE RULED THAT THE VIDEOS ARE FREE SPEECH AND ARE PROTECTED UNDER THE CONSTITUTION. ITS CALLED THE DEPICTION OF ANIMAL CRUELTY ACT AND THE FEDERAL LAW BANS MAKING, SELLING OR POSSESSING VIDEOS OF ANIMALS BEING TORTURED OR MAIMED. 'people that are involved in cockfighting or dog fighting sure they're gonna wanna buy videos of the latest big cockfight or big dog fight and they're gonna pay money for that'LAW ENFORCEMENT SAY THESE VIDEOS ARE POPULAR IN THE COCKFIGHTING COMMUNITY. NEW MEXICO ATTORNEY GENERAL GARY KING FILED A BRIEF IN SUPPORT OF THE LAW TO THE JUSTICES. 'our issue is to support the case in that way and to let the court know this is a very important issue to the states and something we feel is worth fighting all the way to the supreme court ' THE VIEW THAT THE VIDEOS ARE FREE SPEECH PROTECTED BY THE FIRST AMENDMENT DOESN'T HOLD A LOT OF WATER WITH THE A-G'S OFFICE... A POSITION THEY HOPE THE JUSTICES WILL SHARE. 'you'd have to take a pretty skewed view of life to say that impinges on your rights whatsoever to free speech to show an animal ripping apart another animal' THE JUSTICES WILL HEAR ARGUMENTS IN THE CASE THIS FALL AND
