Nine people are indicted on federal drug trafficking conspiracy charges... They all face a minimum of 10 years in federal prison. The alleged ringleader of the group is 29-year-old-Michael Sanmiguel Jr. of Jamestown.. He faces a minimum of 20 years in federal prison. U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley says it’s a wide-spread drug conspiracy involving cocaine, marijuana and meth. He alleges the group is responsible for distributing large quantities of drugs throughout North Dakota, Minnesota, and other locations. and as I said already, I believe they are going to be cooperating defendants and even more will be cooperating in the case so I do expect more arrests. Authorities have been keeping a close eye on the players in this drug conspiracy for nearly a decade... And it was just a few months ago when they say the final pieces fell into place...llowing them to make these arrests.

An investigation into a possible mountain lion attack gives a Bismarck horse owner an answer he’s not willing to accept. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says a mountain lion did not attack a horse near Bismarck. So what may have tore up a horse? Donnell Preskey has the story... If you think Kyle Bergquist was sick when he found his pregnant mare all scratched up you should hear what he has to say now... (Kyle Bergquist) My horse was attacked, they can call it whatever they want, but it was not a tree... Bergquist called the North Dakota Game and Fish Department Wednesday about a possible mountain lion attack. He lives just a few miles of Bismarck. However, Randy Kriel says a mountain lion did not do this to Saba... (Randy Kreil) the wounds on the animal are inconsistent with a mountain lioin attack, they attack the head and the neck not the rear and the belly. (Jeremy Duckwitz) Horse attacked by lion usually large chunks of flesh hanging off and large gaping wounds. When those claws dig in they don't let go. This report has 11 reasons listed why Wildlife officials say it was not a mountain lion attack... Here's Game and Fish's explanation for the horses injuries.. (Kreil) there are instances where horses can jockey back and forth and if something run into sharp objects taht can happen - trees in pasture heigth of animal that scenerio is more likely. (Berquist) IF it was a tree where's the blood? Bergquist is skeptical of the Game and Fish's investigation but Kreil says they have no reason to cover up a mountain lion attack... (Kreil) public needs to know if in fact mountain lions in area, no reason down play the fact if in populated area if there is we would take the lead to deal with situation. Kreil says if they don't get it right they loose credibility. In Bismarck, Donnell Preskey. Bergquist doesn't agree with the Game and Fish's investigation. He says the people should decide on their own.

Lost at sea, shark infested waters, giant man-eating lizards. But for a group of European scuba divers, the drama on the high seas was all too real. In London, CBS’s Charlie D'Agata has the story. <It's SUPPOSED to be a scuba paradise. But for a team of European divers... the waters of Indonesia quickly became hell on earth. It began when they were swept away by fierce riptides. For 12 hours, they drifted helplessly in choppy seas teeming with killer sharks..until they dragged themselves ashore on this remote island and began scavenging for food. (aptn video - for cbs affiliates and o&o use only) ELENA NERALAIREN, SWEDISH TOURIST (:22-:26) WE FOUND SOME MUSSELS, THAT'S THE ONLY THING. THERE IS NO COCONUT TREES, THERE IS NO FRUITS AND NOTHING IN THE ISLAND. (bbc video - no international access) But starvation wasn't their only worry. The island was infested with blood-thirsty Komodo dragons like this...ten feet long, 350 pounds, razor sharp teeth and a poisonous bite, the carnivorous killers have a history of tearing into humans. Divers said they had to pelt one of the predators with rocks and their weight belts to scare it away. FINALLY...45 hours after vanishing they were spotted and rescued by local fisherman. (STANDUP BRIDGE) CHARLIE D'AGATA/LONDON (:54-1:01) THREE OF THE FIVE DIVERS ARE FROM HERE IN BRITAIN - AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO HAD FEARED THE WORST ... NEVER GAVE UP HOPE. (bbc video - no international access) RICHARD ALLIN/SISTER WAS RESCUED (1:02-1:09) SHE HAD BEEN DIVING FOR YEARS SO SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO, THEY'RE ALL VERY CLEVER PEOPLE AND WE'RE JUST LUCKY, I MEAN IT'S LUCK AS WELL ISN'T IT - AS MUCH AS JUDGMENT IN THESE THINGS. Aside from scrapes and bruises the divers will return home unharmed... After coming face to face with the world's largest lizard and living to tell the tale. >

And to help recognize National Tourism Week, the state tourism department intoduced two new television commercials. The goal of the ads is to lay out the welcome mat for vacationers. At the state Heritage Center this morning, the tourism department presented the commercials that will run in other states. They also introduced the improved tourism website. On the site, you can create a travel itinerary, read vacation blogs and view photographs capturing the culture and heritage of the state. (Sara Otte Coleman, Dir., ND Tourism Dept.): A lot of people don’t have an awareness of North Dakota, so their first experience and their first introduction to the state is their vacation or their trip to or through North Dakota. So in a lot of cases, we are creating that image and showing those folks what we have and what North Dakotans are all about. The North Dakota tourism website is ndtourism.com. You can view the new commercials on that site too. And also as part of Tourism Week, the state is launching its third annual Governor's Photo Contest. Any amateur photographer who lives in North Dakota can submit their entries. Categories include scenery, people, and outdoord activities. The deadline to enter is September 7th. For more information, visit the tourism department's web site. That address again is www.ndtourism.com.

His attorney Rauleigh Robinson says Morsette is not a flight risk and has appeared at all previous court hearings. Prosecutor Lloyd Suhr says Morsette has a violent past and a history of alcohol. He says 20 thousand dollars is appropriate. Suhr says this case mirrors Morsettes manslaughter case. Morsette pleaded guilty in 1999 to pushing his wife out a vehicle while he was driving. Morsette was charged earlier this month with assault for biting his girlfriend on the forehead.

Former MAFB Nuclear Weapons Worker Speaks Out

Members of Congress are calling for inquiries into how the incident happened and for assurance that the nation’s nuclear arsenal is properly protected. Jim Olson sat down today with a man who served 14 years at Minot Air Force Base working with nuclear missiles to set some insight about what might have happened last week... (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) I was stationed at Minot in the 5th Munitions Squadron. (Jim Olson, KX News) Roger Harper is no longer in the Air Force - he had to retire after developing diabetes. And his retirement in 2001 is evidence of just how seriously the military takes the security of nuclear weapons (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) Because of the diabetes and the career with nuclear weapons, it was incompatable. (Jim Olson, KX News) Harper spent 14 years as a nuclear weapons technician at Minot Air Force Base (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) For the 14 years I was in nothing like that has ever happened, ever happened. My first reaction was, I was shocked. (Jim Olson, KX News) Harper says it's hard to fathom how highly-guarded nuclear bombs could end up on the tip of a missile under the wing of a B-52 (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) The weapons themselves have their own storage containers and there are other types of safer types of shipment methods than actually on a missile, ready to be launched. (Does that aspect make you wonder?) I kind of sit back and wonder what in that chain broke down. (Jim Olson, KX News) Harper says the process of loading missiles and bombs onto pylons that are attached to the bomber's wings includes many opportunities to catch mistakes, including at the WSA or weapons storage area. (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) If it started in the WSA with them towing a live, hot missile package out there, then the load crew should have detected that it was a hot package. The problem just escalated and it was one of those problems that, I shook my head, and couldn't believe that actually happened. (Jim Olson, KX News) And as for the news that the bomber with the 'hot' nuclear weapons sat for hours at Barksdale Air Force Base before being secured and unloaded is also hard to believe (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) Immediately the aircraft should have been quaranntined with security around the aircraft. And if the aircraft was in fact to be delivered to Barksdale it would have more than likely been immediately downloaded and the pylon taken and put in what's called a Weapons Storage Area. (Jim Olson, KX News) Despite the series of apparent mistakes that allowed the nukes to be missing for several hours, Harper says his experience tells him the incident will only lead to better security (Roger Harper, Retired Nuclear Weapons Tech) They will find out and it won't happen again. Jim Olson, KX News. General Mike Moseley tells Congressman Earl Pomeroy the incident may result in more personnel changes at the base and improved security training.

Weather Extra: Snow, sleet and freezing rain

Winter weather is upon us. This week in weather extra, Ryan and Tom talk about the conditions required for winter precipitation. Ryan - There are plenty of different types of precipitation that can fall from the sky in the winter. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and sometimes rain. They all require very specific conditions in the atmosphere. The atmosphere has different layers...all of which can have different temperatures. Each form of winter precipitation needs a different combination of atmospheric temperatures to form. We’ll use the passage of a cold front to show how precipitation changes. With warm air, air above freezing precipitation stays liquid all the way to the ground. As cold air advances and forces the warm air up, the rain stays liquid, but the ground gets colder. In some cases, objects at the earth's surface are well below freezing, and when the colder raindrops hit those surfaces the rain freezes coating them in ice. We call this freezing rain which is sometimes referred to on a large scale as an ice storm. The warm air continues to advance and some of the raindrops actually start to freeze. Some snowflakes may even be mixed in and some may melt on their way down to the ground. We call this mix of ice rain and snow by one name. Sleet. The cold air continues to move in over a region and the cold layer gets thicker. Now, up in the clouds, the water that previously was used for the raindrops starts to crystalize into six sided flakes. The flakes stay frozen all the way to the ground and snow is the result. Winter precipitation types can sometimes be a challenge to forecast. Each cold air and warm air layer need to be just right to produce each type of frozen and freezing precipitation. If you would like to learn even more about winter precipitation, log on to www.kxnet.com/weatherextra and check out the blog. Ryan will post more detailed information in the weather extra blog. And if you have a question or an idea for weather extra send an e-mail to weather12@kxnet.com
