1969년 1월 8일 생인 알 켈리(R. Kelly)는 '90년대 R&B 최고의 히트 메이커로 꼽히는 프로듀서, 싱어송라이터, 연주인으로 백 밴드 퍼블릭 어나운스먼트(Public Announcement)와 함께 지난 1992년 처음 녹음 작업을 시작했다. 한창 인기의 절정을 달리고 점차로 시들어 가던 뉴 잭 스윙(New Jack Swing) 사운드 그리고 소울(soul) 풍의 멜로디 라인에 펑키(funky) 비트를 접목한 트렌디 R&B/힙 합 사운드가 그의 주 무기였다. 거기에 독실한 기독교 신앙과 지극히 세속적인 성적 메시지가 혼합되어 있는 그 특유의 가사관 또한 독창적인 것이었다. 특히 그의 초기 두 앨범이 그러했고 퍼블릭 어나운스먼트와 함께 발표한 [Born Into The '90’s] 앨범은 'Honey Love', 'Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)’와 같은 히트 넘버를 포함하고 있었다. 후자의 경우 R&B 싱글 차트 1위에 오르기도 했고 'Dedicated’는 팝 싱글 차트 31위에 진출하기까지 했다. 이어 1993년 가을 발표된 [12 Play]는 명실공히 알 켈리를 R&B계의 슈퍼스타로 끌어올린 작품집이다. 5백만 장 이상의 앨범 판매고를 기록했고 첫 싱글 'Sex Me (Parts I & II)’가 골드 싱글을 기록했다. 1994년 싱글 커트 된 두 번째 싱글 'Bump N' Grind’는 팝과 R&B 싱글 차트에서 공히 No. 1을 기록해 각각 12주와 4주간 그 자리를 지켰다. 후속 싱글 'Your Body's Callin'’ 역시 골드 싱글을 기록해 팝 싱글 차트 13위에 오르기도. 1994년 그는 프로듀서로도 두각을 나타냈는데 이는 당시 15살이었던 디트로이트 출신 R&B 싱어 알리야(Aaliyah)의 [Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number] 앨범을 통해서 였다. 후일 둘 사이를 의심케 되는 루머들로 곤욕을 치르기도 했으나 음악적으로는 더할 나위 없이 굳건한 만남이었다. 1995년 여름, 그는 또 한 번 세상을 놀라게 했는데 바로 마이클 잭슨의 [HIStory]앨범에 수록된 두 번째 싱글 'You Are Not Alone’을 공동 작곡하고 프로듀스 해 [빌보드] 싱글 차트에 첫 주 1위로 데뷔시켰기 때문이다. 같은 해 말 발표한 셀프 타이틀 3집 앨범에서 그는 처음으로 앨범 차트 정상에 등극했고 순식간에 4백만 장 이상의 판매고를 기록했다. 3장의 플래티넘 싱글을 배출했는데 모두가 R&B 차트 No. 1에 올랐고 팝 차트에서는 Top 5 이내에 들기도 했다. 1996년에는 영화 [스페이스 잼]에 수록된 'I Believe I Can Fly’로 팝 차트 정상을 밟고 [그래미]에서 '최우수 R&B 남성 보컬 연주 부문 상', ‘최우수 R&B 싱글’, ‘최우수 영화 사운드트랙 상’을 수상하기도 했다. 1997년에도 영화 [배트맨과 로빈] 사운드트랙에 포함된 'Gotham City’로 큰 히트를 기록했다. 이듬 해 발표한 2CD 앨범 [R.]은 6백만 장을 호가하는 판매고를 기록했고 셀린 디온(Celine Dion)과 함께 부른 'I'm Your Angel’이 연말 연시 6주간이나 차트 정상을 지키기도 했다. 2000년 [TP-2.com] 앨범과 함께 다시 꾸준한 인기가도를 달리고 있다. 하지만 2002년 말에 불거진 그의 미성년과의 성관계및 비디오 사건으로 빈 라덴에 빗대어 자신의 처지를 토로했을 만큼 따가운 눈초리를 받고는 있지만, 2003년 초에 발매된 신보 [Chocolate Factory]의 성공과 그가 프로듀스한 B2K의 'Bomb,Bomb,Bomb'와 같은 곡들이 큰 성공을 이루면서 팝신 최고의 프로듀서라는 자신의 타이틀을 굳건히 지키고 있다.
