Kean Wong: New Yorkers and foreign diplomats are in for a special treat at the United Nations this week. Reporter Shelley Zhang has more. You might think of the United Nations as the place where diplomats discuss the most serious of international political issues. But have you ever thought about the cultural side of diplomacy? Well, Wednesday night, at the launch of the Malaysia-Melaka Food Festival, Malaysia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations showcased one of the best parts of cultural diplomacy—delicious food. The festival, hosted by the Permanent Mission, as well as Tourism Malaysia, and Perwakilan New York, is an opportunity for the organizers to share the food and culture of Malaysia with UN members and New Yorkers alike. Running from May 12th through the 23rd at the UN Delegates Dining Room, the food festival highlights how Malaysia, like the United Nations, is the product of a rich cultural stew. Organizers flew several of Malaysia's top chefs to New York for the festival, and they gave a sneak peek of their culinary masterpieces, and a workshop on Malaysian cuisine, last Sunday. A special feature of the food festival is nyonya cuisine, a unique blend of Chinese and Malaysian food. Its roots stretch back to the 15th Century, when Chinese merchants settled down in the trade port of Melaka. For celebrity chef Florence Tan, a household favorite in Malaysia and champion of nyonya cooking, the magic of nyoyna cuisine is in its literal melting pot of flavors…and cultures. [Florence Tan, Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 1:38 ) "It is so special because there are many cuisines interwoven into one cuisine, and we can have the hot, the spicy, the stir fry, many, many types of cuisine, where we have the different textures, where we use a lot of herbs, the aromatic herbs, for example we have the squashed ginger flower, and we have the kaffir lime leaves, everything that makes a special, spectacular dish." Both Chef Florence and her fellow celebrity chef Ismail were quite excited about cooking at the United Nations. ["Chef Ismail", Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 2:14 ) "To cook at the United Nations--not everybody is invited. The best thing is that the whole world is under one roof, and we are feeding the whole world under one roof, and you are very honored." [Florence Tan, Celebrity Chef]: (begins at 2:42 ) "Food brings people together, so it is an honor for me to bring our local food, nyonya cuisine, into New York, where we will share this wonderful cuisine with all the New Yorkers, with all the people around the world who work in the United Nations. And through our food, they will learn about our cuisine, our festival, our culture, our life." Datin Amy Hamidon is the president of Perwakilan and the wife of the Malaysian ambassador to the UN. She says New York is a great place to showcase Nyonya heritage. [Datin Amy Hamidon, President, Perwakilan]: (begins at 1:34 ) "For people to recognize that we have this heritage, that we have this superb, not just food, we have a lavish Baba Nyonya culture." Other organizers hope that an introduction to Malaysian cuisine will help pique people's interest in traveling to the country as well. [Mohamad Taib Ibrahim, VP, Tourism Malaysia NY]: (Start at 1:25 ) "It's a worldwide exercise, whereby we want to showcase to the world that being a multicultural country, we have a multi, diverse type of food. We want to show to the world that the genuine authenticity of the food will entice visitors to come to Malaysia." [Standup] Whether they have never tasted Malaysian food before, or are familiar with the intricacies of nyonya cuisine, the hundreds of people who come to the UN Delegates Dining Room over the course of the next week are sure to taste something special. This is Shelley Zhang, NTD New York.

600th Atlas Launch Highlights

Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., (Oct. 18, 2009) – Adding to the Atlas rocket program’s accomplished five decade legacy, a United Launch Alliance Atlas V successfully launched the U.S. Air Force’s Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F18 (DMSP F18) mission from Space Launch Complex-3 here at 9:12 a.m. PDT, today. The DMSP F18 spacecraft was built for the Air Force by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company in Sunnyvale, Calif. This mission marked the 600th launch of an Atlas vehicle, carrying on a proud tradition that began with the first Atlas A rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., in 1957. For the Atlas V, today’s success was the 18th for the program, with a 100 percent mission success rate. The inaugural launch for the latest Atlas V configuration occurred from CCAFS on Aug. 21, 2002. "This is a proud moment in the 52 year history of the Atlas program and for United Launch Alliance,” said Mark Wilkins, ULA vice president, Atlas Product Line. “First, I want to thank our Air Force customer for trusting ULA to launch this important mission. I’d also like to recognize all the men and women who have served on the Atlas team since 1957. Their determination, dedication and attention to detail have made this significant milestone possible. Combining our Atlas and Delta launch vehicle program’s more than 100 years of experience gives ULA the most experienced space launch team in the world.” During the program’s history, 315 launches have taken place from CCAFS with 285 missions, including today’s launch, launching from Vandenberg. While the Atlas program has launched numerous important missions, it may be most famous for launching Mercury astronauts John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper during the early days of human space flight. Atlas has also launched several Moon and planetary missions including the recent Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission on June 18. This mission, designated AV-017, was launched aboard an Atlas V 401 configuration using the Common Core Booster powered by the RD-180 engine. The 17 previous Atlas V launches included three missions each for the Air Force, NASA, and NRO along with eight for commercial customers. ULA’s next launch, currently scheduled for Nov. 14, is the Atlas V IntelSat-14 mission from Space Launch Complex-41 at CCAFS.
