Jean, a prisoner in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, meets a captive Australian, Joe, and the two form a mutually affectionate relationship. To relieve the starvation of the female prisoners Joe steals some chickens, but is caught and sentenced to be executed. Later, back in peacetime London, Jean decides to return to Malaya, where she learns that Joe did not actually die.
