Stars honor Nelson Mandela

It attracted a glittering line up of stars from the screen, stage and sporting worlds. But the birthday boy proved to be the biggest star of all. As celebrities and 50,000 cheering fans paid tribute to Nelson Mandela for his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park, the iconic figure sent his own message to the crowd. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NELSON MANDELA SAYING: "Tonight we can stand before you, free. We are honoured to be back in London for this wonderful occasion, celebration but even as we celebrate, let us remind ourselves that our work is far from complete. Where there is poverty and sickness including AIDS, where human beings are being oppressed there is more work to be done. Our work is for freedom for all." The event was organised to support Mandela's HIV/AIDS charity "46664", named after his prison number. It comes 20 years after London hosted another concert for the statesman when he was still behind bars for his stand against apartheid. Hollywood actor, Will Smith hosted the event which included acts such as Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse and Annie Lennox. (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) ACTOR AND SINGER WILL SMITH SAYING: "We are here tonight in wonderful celebration. Now Peter Gabriel once said 'if the world could only have one father, the man that we would chose to be our father would be Nelson Mandela'." Mandela's visit to London was overshadowed by events in Zimbabwe where disputed elections have just ended. During his visit, Mandela uttered just four words of criticism of Zimbabwe calling it a "tragic failure of leadership", and they made headline news. Mandela officially retired from politics nine years ago, but such a tribute to the man shows he is still a moral authority admired the world over. Suranjana Tewari, Reuters.
