9/13/07 Padang suffered considerable damage A second strong earthquake has hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, a day after an 8.4 magnitude tremor destroyed buildings in several towns and cities. At least six people are confirmed dead, but officials fear bad communications may be hiding the scale of the impact. Wednesday's quake was measured by US officials as magnitude 8.4, and a new tremor of 7.7 hit on Thursday. Many buildings, weakened in the first tremor, are now reported to have been destroyed in the city of Padang. "Many buildings collapsed after this morning's quake," mayor Fauzi Bahar told a local radio station. "We're still trying to find out about victims." Three people are reported trapped in a collapsed three-storey office building, the mayor said. But despite several warnings since the first earthquake, there have so far been no tsunamis. The initial quake sparked warnings across the Indian Ocean, but only a small wave surge hit Sumatra, causing little damage. At least a dozen aftershocks have been felt and four tsunami warnings were declared during a period of 24 hours, the BBC's Lucy Williamson reports from Jakarta. People are being told to leave their homes on the coast and move inland. Thousands of people were reported to have spent the night sleeping in the open air in the areas of Benkulu and Padang after the previous quake left them terrified, she adds. Buildings destroyed Information about damage caused by Wednesday's earthquake is still patchy and assessment of many areas is hampered by darkness and communication problems, our correspondent says. Many of the stricken areas are remote, and it may take some time to find out how bad the situation is. Health officials in the capital, Jakarta, say teams carrying food and medicine are travelling to the area and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an emergency team from the army and police. A United Nations assessment team is also departing for Sumatra...

03-25-2007 TOKYO - A powerful, deadly earthquake struck Japan early Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring 162 others as it violently shook buildings and triggered a small tsunami that hit the coast, officials and media reports said. The magnitude-6.9 quake struck at 9:42 a.m. local time off the north coast of Ishikawa prefecture (state), Japan's Meteorological Agency said, about 225 miles northwest of Tokyo. The agency issued a tsunami warning urging people near the sea to move to higher land. A small tsunami measuring 6 inches hit shore about 40 minutes after the quake, the agency said. The warning was lifted about an hour later. Lower intensity temblors continued to strike the region throughout the afternoon. A strong temblor with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 hit at 6:14 p.m., but there was no tsunami danger, the agency said. The quake toppled buildings, triggered landslides, cut power, interfered with phone service, broke water mains and snarled public transportation. At least one person was killed and 162 others were hurt along the country's Sea of Japan coast, media reports said. Fear of aftershocks and more landslides caused by the loosening of soil waterlogged by overnight rains continued to plague the quake zone.

Three bodies were recovered Sunday. Rescuers were searching the cold Pacific waters for the other missing people from the beach after the 6.2 magnitude quake the day before, authorities said. Oscar Catalan, the mayor of the nearby town of Puerto Aysen, saw six people at the shore pulled away by the current, according to the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio. A correspondent for television network Chilevision, Orlando Adriazola, also reported seeing a man and his young daughter dragged into the water by a large wave. He said he was at the beach to install an antenna for his station. The government's Emergency Bureau said three bodies were found washed up on beaches in the fjord on Sunday. The victims were identified as Ernesto Contreras, 65; his wife, Elsa Poblete, 54, and their 2-year-old grandson Genaro Linay, the agency said. The bureau said there was no tsunami after the earthquake. The waves were apparently created when several landslides from neighboring hills crashed into the sea at the bottom of the narrow fjord, causing the water level to rise steeply, said Juan Cayupi, a volcanologist investigating the incident for the government. The inlet is surrounded by high hills, parts of which are covered with a dense forest. At some points, the land drops off into rocky cliffs that fall vertically into the water. ``There were some boats in the area and waves destroyed them,'' said Cayupi, who was also at the beach at the time of the quake and spoke to The Associated Press by telephone. ``The boat we arrived in was thrown on t...

At Least 75 Killed In Java Landslides.

At least 75 people have been killed or left missing after torrential rain caused floods and landslides in Indonesia. Rescue services in Java say the landslides were the worst for a quarter of a century. Many areas remain cut off after floods destroyed local roads. Thousands of people were moved to shelters after their homes were washed away. Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency reported 24 bodies had been recovered in Karang Anyar district. The number of victims may rise; varying reports said at least 50 or 60 people are still missing. Heavy rains often cause floods or landslides in Indonesia. Years of deforestation have left hillsides unprotected, with little vegetation to stabilise the soil. The floods and landslides happened on the anniversary of the catastrophic indian Ocean tsunami which struck Indonesia and other countries in the region three years ago today. Around a quarter of a million people were killed by the giant waves.
