A great advance in helicopter propulsion had come in the 1950s with the adaptation of the gas turbine engine to helicopter flight. The piston-drive engines used in Korea and on the Army's UH-34 utility helicopters in the 1950s and early 1960s had produced only one horsepower for each three pounds of engine weight. New gas turbine engines had a much more favorable efficiency ratio. This permitted the construction of small, low-profile aircraft. One of the most important milestones during this period was the decision to develop the XH-40 Bell Utility Helicopter and to power it with a turbine engine. Although designed as an aerial ambulance, it was recognized even then that this machine might turn out to be the most useful aerial platform ever put in production. In 1955, with an interest in a utility helicopter designed around a turboshaft engine, the Army had the Air Force develop a new helicopter for its use. At that time the Army did not have its own aircraft development capability. The design competition was for the first helicopter for the Medical Service Corps, whose primary mission was to be used for aeromedical evacuation. The winner of this competition was Bell Helicopter Company with its model, the XH-40. The design selected, Bell's Model 204, was to be powered by a new Lycoming T-53 engine of some 850 shaft horsepower and featured a typical Bell two-blade teetering rotor. This was the first turbine-powered helicopter for the Army. First flight of the new design was in October 1956, development and production following in 1959. The early Bell XH-40 had been standardized as the HU-1 and was envisioned then as the replacement for the L-20 utility airplane and the H-19 utility helicopter. Further growth versions of the Bell machine were planned to replace the bulk of the missions then performed by the Sikorsky H-84 and the Vertol H-21. In the original helicopter designation series, the first three aircraft receiv...

The Army Air Corps Blue Eagles helicopter display team was formed by instructors at the School of Army Aviation, Middle Wallop, in the spring of 1968. Using aircraft from the School, they gave displays in their spare time throughout the summer and the season culminated with the SBAC exhibition at Farnborough. The success of the first season's flying was such that the demand for a full-time display team was met the following year. Their unique and spectacular routines were seen at over 70 public shows throughout the United Kingdom, at events ranging from country carnivals to the Battle of Britain Anniversary air display. Over the next few years, the team's programme continued to expand and by 1974 they were including venues as far apart as the Channel Islands, Scotland and Germany. The actual display routines were developed over the years and the team's initial aircraft were 5 standard Bell-47G3B1 Sioux helicopters. The six pilots were selected from operational squadrons in the UK ands overseas and they flew exclusively for the Blue Eagles from February to October. No formal instruction in formation flying techniques was included in the Army pilot's training at that time and consequently all Blue Eagle pilots underwent eight weeks of intensive training and rehearsals before their first appearance in public. Over the years the Corps realised it could not afford a full-time display team and thus the Blue Eagles disbanded. Fortunately, an enthusiastic group of instructors at Middle Wallop formed a volunteer, part-time team the following year and, under another name, continued the Army's display flying, but this time their duties were carried out in their own time. The Army Air Corps display team has continued under the name: Eagles, Army Eagles, Sparrow-hawks and for the AAC's 25th Anniversary, the Silver Eagles. Flying a mix of aircraft including Sioux, Gazelle, Lynx, Scout and even in some years incorporated the Army Historic Flight's fixed wing and rotary...

Rep. Courtney Announces Retroactive ‘Stop Loss’ Payments for Veterans, Troops Troops Subjected to Involuntary Service Extension Now Eligible for $500 Payment per Month WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney was joined today by Connecticut Attorney General Blumenthal, former Sergeant in the Marine Reserves, and Major General Thaddeus Martin, Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard, as he announced that the federal government, through an act of Congress, has begun providing retroactive payments to troops subjected to extended military service in Iraq and Afghanistan through the policy of “Stop Loss.” Since 2001, 422 members of the Connecticut National Guard have been subjected to “Stop Loss.” Of that total, 177 are stilling serving today. “The commitment that our veterans, active duty troops, and their families have made must be matched by our assurance that they will be treated honorably and fairly for the unexpected disruption to their lives caused by Stop Loss,” stated Courtney. “Those who were stop-lossed went far above and beyond their contracted obligation and we owe them more than just a ‘thank you’. This is one way to give our veterans and troops something tangible and real that may help relieve the burden to their lives and the lives of their loved ones. My office is prepared to help each qualified veteran and active duty troop apply for and receive their retroactive payment.” “At a time of rhetoric and speechmaking, this stop loss reform provides real action to back our words. We owe so much to our military men and women — and this step is a long overdue measure they deserve. All who were stop- lossed -- compelled to stay beyond their enlistments or retirements -- should apply for this compensation. Extra pay -- $500 for each month of stop loss -- is the least we can do for these servicewomen and men who did extra service going above and beyond,” st...
