Fox: Anarchists planning to 'crash' RNC convention

Since last summer, an anarchist group calling itself the RNC Welcoming Committee has been advertising its intention to be present at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN this September, even releasing a video showing black-clad figures cheerfully spreading the word. However, when a leaked plan for moving delegates in and out of the convention center was posted at Indymedia.org las More.. t week and online posts suggested the anarchist group was planning to blockade major bridges and intersections, the local Fox News affilliate became concerned that "the protesters goal is to block delegate access leaving the hotels on the six bridges leading to St. Paul, as well as into and out of the Xcel Center." By Monday, Fox News was spreading this local coverage nationwide, telling their audience that anarchists "have plans to crash the Republican Convention" and featuring an interview on local community radio with three members of the RNC Welcoming Committee over the banner "anarchists plan to cut off the arena from entering delegates." "We're not trying to influence the Republicans," stated one anarchist in the radio interview. "They already know that people are against the war. People are against pollution and global warming and racism. The Republicans don't seem to care." "We don't think the political elite will stop because we ask nicely," explained another. "And so we advocate a strategy of direct action -- in this case, not letting them hold the convention." Fox concluded ominously that "the RNC Welcoming Committee says property destruction is not part of their plans -- but they wouldn't rule it out either." Armed Deputies Raid Late-Night Anarchist RNC Protest Meeting in St. Paul

police raid late night protest meeting St. Paul has seen another confrontation between protestors and police officers before the Republican National Convention has even started. Friday night, after 9:00 on Smith Ave., witnesses say about a dozen police officers from Ramsey County barged into a building, guns drawn and detained almost 60 people. The people inside the building are pro More.. testors who were meeting, training, and eating together in preparation for the upcoming RNC. According to witnesses, police said they had a warrant, but would not say what they were searching for specifically at that time. People detained in the raid were made to give their name, address and had their photo taken. They were released one by one. The building is connected to the protest group the RNC Welcoming Committee. BILLY BRAGG Billy Bragg was described by The Times newspaper as a ‘national treasure’. In the two and a half decades of his career Bragg has certainly made an indelible mark on the conscience of British music, becoming perhaps the most stalwart guardian of the r More.. adical dissenting tradition that stretches back over centuries of the country’s political, cultural and social history. Bragg was born in December 1957. He was thus 19-years-old when punk made its indelible contribution to English popular culture, in 1977. Bragg’s own particular contribution was to form a band called Riff Raff, who released a series of indie seven-inch singles including the wonderfully titled I Wanna Be a Cosmonaut. True cultural significance, however, was to escape Riff Raff, who eventually split in 1981. Perhaps remarkably, given Bragg’s punk antecedents, he briefly joined a tank regiment of the British Army before buying his way out with what he later described as the most wisely spent £175 of his life. Between time working in a record store, and absorbing his new-found love of blues and politically-inspired folk music, Bragg launched himself on a solo musical career. Armed with a guitar, amplifier and voice, he undertook a maverick tour of the concert halls and clubs of Britain, ready at a moment’s notice to fill in as support for almost any act.
