Warren Selvey, youngish prosecuting attorney in his thirties, is talking to his father-in-law, Senator Kelper. Kelper tells Selvey that the political bigshots in the state are beginning to wonder about his low conviction rate. Unless Selvey can get a conviction in the forthcoming Rodman case, Vance, a younger man, will be nominated for District Attorney in Selvey’s place. Selvey presents an impassioned case against Rodman. While the jury is out, Vance bets with the newspapermen that Selvey will lose this one, too. Selvey is accosted in a bar across the street by a little man, Barnes, who says he has something to tell him. But before Barnes can finish, Selvey is told that the jury is returning, and rushes back to court.
