The Beatles was een popgroep uit Liverpool. Ze worden beschouwd als een van de populairste en invloedrijkste bands uit de geschiedenis van de popmuziek. Ze waren actief van 1962 tot 1970. De reacties van hun tienerpubliek bereikten binnen korte tijd een hysterische omvang ('Beatlemania'). Tijdens de tweede helft van hun carrire verrichtten ze pionierswerk in de geluidsstudio, waarmee ze in bredere kring lof oogstten. De eclectische benadering van de Beatles was een belangrijke factor in de ontwikkeling van de popmuziek, die ten tijde van hun carrire uitgroeide van een op Amerikaanse rhythm and blues gebaseerd genre, tot een veel breder georinteerde vorm van muziek. Beatles-leden John Lennon en Paul McCartney waren onbetwist de belangrijkste liedjesschrijvers van het viertal. Naast dit tweetal bestond de groep uit George Harrison en Ringo Starr. Die bracht op zijn beurt weer schoolvriendje George Harrison mee. Na diverse personeelswisselingen binnen de groep (belangrijke ex-leden zijn Stuart Sutcliffe en Pete Best) die ook nog eens onder een keur van namen optrad, werden de uiteindelijke Beatles gevormd in 1962 toen drummer Pete Best werd vervangen door Ringo Starr. Starr, wiens echte naam Richard Starkey is, speelde daarvoor bij Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, ook uit Liverpool. Volgens het Guinness Book of Records is Yesterday het meest gecoverde liedje ooit. In totaal zijn er circa 3000 verschillende covers gemaakt, waarvan de eerste uitkwam in het Verenigd Koninkrijk drie maanden na het verschijnen van het album Help!. Yesterday was het eerste nummer van de Beatles dat werd opgenomen door n lid van de groep, namelijk Paul McCartney. Als single verscheen het in de VS in september 1965; in het Verenigd Koninkrijk pas in 1976. In Nederland bereikte het in november 1965 de hoogste plek in de Top 40. Yesterday heette in de aanvangsfase eerst Scrambled eggs. Het is voor het overgrote deel geschreven door Paul McCartney, met een kleine bijdrage van John Lennon. Het nummer werd uiteindelijk wel toegeschreven aan het duo Lennon-McCartney, de combinatie die gebruikt werd voor alle nummers geschreven door Lennon en/of McCartney in de Beatles-periode. Het nummer werd in 2005 door de muziekzender MTV en het Amerikaanse muziektijdschrift Rolling Stone tot beste popnummer sinds 1963 uitgeroepen, voor Satisfaction van de Rolling Stones en Smells like teen spirit van Nirvana. Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band's debut feature film 'A Hard Days Night', 'Help!' made its theatrical debut in 1965. The story follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police. La canción "Yesterday" de Paul McCartney fue grabada por The Beatles para su álbum Help! en 1965, que llegó a los 10 primeros lugares a los tres meses de haber salido a la venta. McCartney ha comentado en varias entrevistas que considera esta canción como la mejor de sus composiciones. "Yesterday" fue la primera grabación del grupo en la que un solo miembro de la banda cantaba; el acompañamiento de un cuarteto de cuerdas fue agregado durante la producción de la canción.
