Baby Doll Meighan is a pretty, vacuous Southern 'white trash' gal who at 19 still sleeps in a crib and sucks her thumb. She has been married for two years to ineffectual, bigoted Archie Lee. The couple have not yet consummated their marriage because Archie Lee promised Baby Doll’s dying father that he would not touch his daughter until she said she was "ready for marriage." He is frustrated by this strain and obliged to peek at his squirmy half-dressed child-bride through a hole in her bedroom wall. Archie Lee is further humiliated incensed by a flashy Sicilian business rival who has recently managed to force Archie Lee's decrepit cotton gin out of business. One night in a fit of desperation and frustration, Archie Lee burns down his rival's cotton gin. The rest of the story describes the Sicilian's revenge as he blatantly pursues and seduces a distraught but sensually aroused Baby Doll, and attempts to terrorize her into revealing Archie Lee's crime. After the two Texans give each other a big ol' Lone Star-style greeting, they get to jawing about having Anna help out and preside over some civil cases for the show. Kimmie would be the bailiff--cop duds and all--and Howard could chime in with some court-us interruptus commentary. Larry Joe is happy, Anna is excited, and Howard is just pleased to get out of buying a hat.

Hello, my name is Arlene Knappe Shuster. I was born in 1936 at the Escondido Community Hospital. I cherish the memories I have of growing up in the hidden valley of Escondido during the World War II years. My father was Oscar Knappe, a first-generation American. His parents emigrated from Germany and settled in San Diego, where my dad was born in 1909. The family moved to Escondido in 1911, establishing a dry cleaning/tailor shop business at the corner of Grand and Valley Parkway. My father and his five sisters, Margaret, Elsie, Helen, Bertha and Frieda, all graduated from Escondido High School. My dad graduated in 1927, the first class to do so “from the high school on the hill.” In 1953, I was in the last class to complete schooling in that same building, before a wrecking ball was taken to it because it did not meet earthquake standards. In 1919, my grandparents, Julius and Bertha Knappe were one of the four founding families of Grace Lutheran Church. In time, the congregation grew, a minister, Rev. W.W.F. Hoffman was called to serve. The group eventually purchased the steepled church located at Grand and Ivy from the Methodists. My mother traces her ancestry back to the Mayflower. She was born and raised in San Diego by relatives. She was orphaned during the influenza epidemic in the early 1900’s. Mom married my father in 1934, and moved to Escondido, where my dad was manager of Valley Oil Company, located at that time near the intersection of Washington and North Broadway. The office telephone number was 92-J. In 1936, the Escondido Community Hospital was located on South Broadway at 2nd Avenue. Dr. L.E. Adams, who delivered most of the babies of that era, had his office on the southwest corner of 2nd and Broadway, where Rosemary-Duff Florist is located today. South of Dr. Adam’s office was the original Duff Florist and finally, Alhiser Mortuary took up the rest of the block. The exterior of the mortuary looks much the same as it did...
