ヤマハ・SR（エスアール）とは、ヤマハ発動機が販売しているオートバイで、主に単気筒エンジンを搭載したシリーズ車種を指す。 SR400 The series model in which the single cylinder engine is chiefly installed is indicated with the motorcycle that YAMAHA MOTOR is selling with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and SR (Esarl). SR400は1978年に発売、以来2008年現在まで基本設計・デザインを変更せず販売し続けているロングセラー。現在はこのSR400のみが製造・販売されている。発売に至る経緯オートバイ雑誌「モトライダー」が、1977年のエイプリルフール企画として、実在しない車を「近日発売の新車ヤマハ・ロードボンバー (Road Bomber) 」として掲載したことが発端となっている。このロードボンバーは、ヤマハのオフロードバイクXT500のエンジンを使い、島英彦設計によるオリジナルのダブルクレードルフレームに搭載したロードスポーツバイクであった。紙面の写真で見るとなかなか完成度の高いオートバイであったため、まさかエイプリルフール企画の架空の新車とは思わず読者からの注文が殺到した。そこにマーケットがあることが判明したことから、XT500のメーカーであるヤマハが本気になって設計し生産を始めたという、冗談のような経緯でS Rシリーズは誕生した。当時その様な経緯で作られたため、最初のSRは中途半端にモトクロスのようなアップハンドル、エンジンガードなどモトクロス風な出で立ちであった。初期のSRは作りも甘く、エンジントラブルなどが頻繁であったが品質改良などでいまと昔ではまったく別次元のバイクになっているロードボンバーのコンセプトは、「単気筒エンジンを搭載したロードスポーツバイク。単気筒であるからエンジンが非力であるのはいたしかたないが、しかし全体として軽量にすることができ、そのことを最大限に生かして操縦性の良さに照準をあわせたバイクを設計するならば、それは乗っていて『とても楽しい』バイクになるはずだ」というものであった。ロードボンバーは当時のオンロードスポーツバイクとしてはかなり過激な設計であったため、SRシリーズはそのコンセプトをマイルドな側に倒すかたちで設計された。例えばSR400/500のフレームはXT500のものをベースとしたセミダブルクレードルでしかない（ロードボンバーは完全新設計のダブルクレードル）。しかし基本的なコンセプトは、おおむね同一のものであったと言える（なお、後日ロードボンバーときわめてよく似た構成のSRXという派生車種も登場する）。ロードボンバーはのちにホンダのXL500Sのエンジンを乗せ、「ロードボンバーII X」へと改良される。これは後のFT500/400から、GB500/400を経て現在のCB400SSにも繋がるエンジンである。今を走る単気筒の2車種が同じロードボンバーから派生したというのも何かの縁なのかもしれない。
