Playing Helsinki, Goteburg, Kil, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Odessa, Lviv, Kraków and finally returning stateside for the Santa Clarita Valley Film Festival in 2006, this is the little Super 8mm film that could! Before I shot this, I couldn't find an example of what extended nighttime time lapse would look like when done on Super 8mm. So I thought I'd try it. This was done all at night. Slow speed Ektachrome 64T Super 8mm. One roll. 2-4 second exposures per frame. Shot all single frame. Budget under $40. Camera was a Nizo 561 Macro with the variable shutter. Being able to hold the shutter wide open for as long as you want, is a pretty cool feature on the later Nizo models. I was bummed about how soft the shots were and lack of stability. I thought shooting single frame would actually give the film less of the Super 8mm jitter and might be sharper, reasoning that the film would settle in the gate better when doing single frame. I venture to guess if I did this with a Bolex and shot on 16mm it would have been sharper and steadier. But it was fun to do and affordable. Many thanks to the extremely talented, experimental filmmaker Paolo Davanzo, whom I studied under at COC. I learned more about filmmaking in one semester from Paolo, than four years and a ton of wasted money would have got me at most film schools! Relax and tune in mentally...
