to what do we pledge our allegiance? Sandi Higgins launched this experimental short film while she was also working on the Hollywood film _The Interpreter_ as Director of Photography Darius Khondji's assistant. She and her crew shot the project in the three days of Easter holiday weekend. Higgins had taken a leave of absence from New York University in order to work on The Interpreter - once the feature wrapped and she returned to complete her degree, she edited One Nation Under and submitted it as her final student project. Surreal and absurd, it is composed of poetic images (all staged on the streets of downtown Manhattan) which seek to express the paradoxes of American identity after 9/11. There is no single subject, story, or message in the film. The various characters and "situations" are connected by a common search for perspective and understanding.
