On November 1st, 1987 former Quebec Premier René Lévesque died from a heart ailment. One of his associates, Bloc Quebecois MP Francine Lalonde (La Pointe-de-L’Ile, Que.) got to know him well when she was minister of the Status of Women in his cabinet in 1985. She looks back on some career highlights and on her favorite memories of Mr. Lévesque. The Auditor General of Canada, Sheila Fraser, shares details of her latest report, which she tabled in the House of Commons yesterday. Two Quebec City personalities were front and centre at yesterday's hearings of the Bouchard-Taylor Commission on Reasonable Accomodation in the province's capital. In his remarks, the Archbishop of Quebec, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, advocated a return to Catholic values. He denounced the way in which schools have replaced catechetical instruction and courses on morals by a compulsory class on religious beliefs. Huron chief Max Gros-Louis reminded the audience that Aboriginals have been robbed of their land because they had been too accomodating. He said that Aboriginals have since had to ask the governments of Canada and Quebec - which they consider "immigrants" - for everything. We present excerpts from yesterday's discussions.
