George Piper, senior teller of the New Amsterdam Trust Co., Sturges St. branch, quickly hides his racing form and betting sheet as Henry C. Farnsworth, the new manager, comes up to him. George’s hiding place is under the clip in his cash drawer. There the racing form can't be seen and only George has the key. At his apartment that night, George talks with his brother Fred, who points out the lean times the fun-loving George will have after he retires. Now Fred has gotten a lead on a good business investment, all they would need is $10,000. George scoffs at the idea that Fred might think he would embezzle it — you can't do it, George says. "Then all you would have to do is hide the money in a safe place until later..."
